Live Oak Jr High on fire...looks like gym..

Gym burning down to the ground. This is the old live oak high school gym that was updated years ago. Trying to keep it from spreading to classrooms right now. Doesn’t look good at all. Several classrooms destroyed behind it. Early speculation but it has been mentioned they believe it was caused by lightening strike.
I live 7 houses down from it and it’s a huge fire. They said one firefighter was injured.

the gym and a couple T buildings are a total loss..

Good hypothesis IMO. The weather was atrocious this AM. We had power surge and a lot of close strikes.

Damn. I played lots of volleyball and dodgeball in that gym in the 80s for P.E. I took a walk through one day six or seven years ago and found a bunch of the old trophies and school-record boards from the 70s and 80s in the storage room above the locker rooms.

Wife told me they had Hwy 16 shut down due to the smoke. Sounds like a huge deal.
IIRC, that was the same gym my mom played basketball in during the early 1960s. I remember going to a LOHS graduation there in late 1980s—it was an old building then, and that was 30+ years ago.

My money is on Demco having something to do with it. There was 3 trucks working on the lines on Calmes Rd about an hour before the fire started. Lightening was over for at least 3 hours before that.
