Lightning bugs / fireflys

I saw one tonight while the ole gal and I went for an evening swim. We both agreed we haven't seen one in probably 20 years. I was rooting for the little fella while he flew over the lanai because the lawn guy sprayed the yard with insecticide today. I miss lightning bugs.

Sucks they're being killed off.

We still see bunches of them in rural areas where they don't spray for mosquitos, but around Baton Rouge, it's rare to see them. I guess our city's mosquito abatement program has had some unfortunate casualties.

I see one once or twice a year in my back yard. It was probably 10 years since I had seen one before I moved into this house though.

Blame mosquito spraying. Idiots are so scared of west nile they spray that shite and kill every insect in the area.

Which doesn't seem to even kill mosquitoes.

The woods around Riverbend subdivision in Baton Rouge are filled with them. Our yard backs up to the woods and we can see thousands of them most nights. They don't leave the woods though. Never see them in the yard.
Edit; we don't see them year round. They have been out in last few weeks.

I can remember as a kid catching them and putting them in Mason jars and making a light . Punching holes in the top and maybe a leaf inside as if that would make them feel comfortable. Anyway they are a cool arse bug. I wouldn't mind seeing tax dollars spent to rejuvenate them.

It's too bad they aren't able to adapt to their environmental situation and survive. If they provided any use to our earth other than being fun to catch in a jar, maybe they'd be better off today.

Still see them around the woods by my property in Ascension. Definitely fewer than when I was young. You could see on a moonless night around here.

You want people to spend their hard earned money on saving an INSECT, all for your entertainment?
Doesn't that seem a bit selfish to you?

Loss of habitat(woods, water, rotten wood), pesticides, and light pollution. Scientist think they communicate through flashing their light to attract a mate. So to much light messes up their sexy time.

Love em. Their powers come from the enzyme with the coolest name: luciferase.
