Kind of a no brainer. This chord progression is as old as time.

here's what I don't get.

It's 2016. There aren't any new notes out there. Music has been played for centuries....pretty much every song today using guitars is going to sound somehwat like another piece of music that came before it.

Unless it's a VERY OBVIOUS RIPOFF like bowie/vanilla ice, I don't see how/why it's worth going after people because a couple notes sounds like a couple notes from another song.

A lot...A lot of their songs came from jazz and blues songs with no real originator...so who gets the credit?

The credit goes to the artistry.

I initially read this and thought it was ridiculous to claim a chord progression. Then I listened to the song. If they played shows together, I don't believe that is coincidence. Listen to the song.

Not necessarily saying they should get rights on this arpeggio. But I think its pretty obvious Zeppelin ripped this off/used it as inspiration. Whether they deserve royalties is a different question.

Those were very different. Vanilla Ice had a high hat sound at the end of his sample.

During the trial, defence lawyers argued that the chord progression in question was very common and had been in use for more than 300 years.

So the band Spirit "stole" a common chord progressiong that's been around more than 300 years, then all of a sudden think they're the rightful owner of said chord progression?

Am I reading that correctly?

at Bowie writing that funky Deacon bass line.

To be fair, all of their stories seemed to contradict each other, but Occam's Razor suggests Deacon came up with the riff and, at best, Bowie changed 1 note in the sequence, if at all, and the song itself was a collaboration of all 5 of them.

And all Mr. Van Winkle stole was the bass line.

I think the melody in Stairway is more derived from the corresponding High "E" string notes of A, B, C and not the walk down notes on the "D" string of A, Ab, G which is the only thing in common with the Spirit song.
