LeBlanc's Market in Gonzales to oppose new Wal Mart because of "safety concerns"

LeBlanc’s vows to fight Walmart Neighborhood Market planned across the street from Gonzales store
STEPHANIE RIEGEL
DECEMBER 10, 2014
The owners of LeBlanc’s Food Stores plan to fight a proposed Walmart Neighborhood Market that would be developed directly across the street from its location at the intersection of Airline Highway and Duplessis Street in Gonzales. Though plans for the Walmart have yet to be officially announced by the company, the Ascension Parish Board of Adjustments approved a zoning variance for the project last month.
LeBlanc’s owner Randy LeBlanc says while the proposed Walmart would obviously pose a competitive threat to his location at 14635 Airline Highway, the reason he objects to the plans is because of safety concerns over increased traffic the proposed store would bring to the area.
“There is a safety issue with the amount of traffic that would be on the road separating our properties,” LeBlanc says. “There’s a brand new fire station there already, and with the amount of traffic Walmart would bring, I think it could lead to a variety of safety issues.”
LeBlanc did not say what steps he might take to try to block the store, which would be on the same side of Airline Highway and across Duplessis Street from his supermarket, except to say, “We are looking at pursuing this as a legal matter.”
Engineers representing Walmart filed for the variance earlier this fall, though there is no timeline yet for the proposed project, according to an Ascension Parish spokesman. No detailed plans have been filed with the parish, and the company has yet to do traffic or drainage studies. Also, Walmart must still acquire the property on which it hopes to build.
Sources familiar with the project say Walmart has a purchase agreement on the site and expects to close the deal soon. A local real estate agent who represents Walmart declines to comment.
Walmart Neighborhood Markets are scaled down versions of the larger supercenter stores the Arkansas-based retailer is best known for. Walmart already has two larger supercenter stores in Ascension Parish—one at 308 N. Airline Highway in Gonzales and another at 17585 Airline Highway in Prairieville. It also has a Donaldsonville store. —Stephanie Riegel

Damn, this Walmart is right down the street from another one.

I think I would continue my streak of not going into WalMart if it was built.

4.9 miles LINK... what the frick is Walmart doing?
I dont have an issue with the one on 44/42, because that entire intersection needed a face lift.
This new proposed location seems like overkill, and "showing off".

It's depressing to me that any lifelong residents of Gonzales would shop at Wal Mark over a local, family-owned business like LeBlanc's.

Not at all.
No one wants a direct competitor next door, but the AG stores can compete with Wal Mart if they need to. A lot of them do it every day.

Those, dollar generals, and family dollars are popping up everywhere.
My mom lives out in the country and there is a mom and pop store 3 miles from her home. Unfortunately because they are still so isolated everything is extremely marked up. The next closest store is 20 miles away.
Family dollar just built across the street from the mom and pop store in the last month or so. That's all I've heard about, "They're going to drive those good people out of business..."
And they will. This mom and pop store stocks only themselves. Family dollar buys stuff and stocks 1000's of locations across the country. Of course, the prices will go down.

I love Walmart's angle on all of this. Here in Monroe/West Monroe, there are three prominent Brookshire's. WalMart is literally building a Neighborhood Grocery within eyesight of each one.
One of the Neighborhood Groceries is less than a mile as the crow flies from a SuperCenter.
WalMart says frick local businesses who charge me too much, and I like it.

I heard they want to build one in Dutch town too. Is there any way to fight it? I'll pay a little more to shop locally (LeBlanc and harvest) than have a wal mart come in.

Neighborhood Walmart did the same thing to Carter's Grocery in Denham Springs. Literally across the street.
I'm not sure if they really agree with the research mom-and-pop out into choosing a location or if they're just being competitive.
I shop at Walmart all the time, but I also spend about half of my grocery money at local or convenience stores. I don't approve of WM posting up to squeeze out the small guy.

I've only been involved with a few dozen site selections like this and work in this real estate sector. Independent Grocer (like AG and Rouses), Whole Foods, and Wal Mart have gaining market share in the SoLa area at the expense of the Supervalue serviced stores, WD, and other mid sized chains.
The independent grocers like LeBlancs can compete if they want to.

A lot of those mom and pops around the country are serviced by a much larger co-op. They aren't as defenseless as they seem.

There's already a new Firestation there? So what-A firestation doesn't cause too much traffic-Safety issue-bullshite. Good luck in you battle with Wal Mart, Randy.

I live in a town of 35,000 in MS. We currently have 2 super Wal-Marts within 4 miles of each other. Wal-Mart has proposed to build 3 Wal-Mart Marketplace stores in town. The local owned stores are raising hell. One owner stated he's not anti Wal-Mart and has no problems with the 2 we already have. He stated He is anti Wal-Mart on every corner. I agree.

Why? I like convenient sources of grocery shopping. I stop every day on the way home and get food. Why do I care if it's a WalMart (who will be cheaper) or a local business that has been getting fat off of high prices for years.
For example, I got 5 Healthy Choice lunches from WalMart the other day, and it cost me 8.50. Brookshire's had a special the other day that was 4 for 10.

quote:The only reason stores like this throughout NOLA and other parts of SELA are proximity.. If I have the time, I'll absolutely get my trash on and go spend $50 at Wal-Mart vs. the $75-100 at Rouse's... The problem is, with them being across the street, they won't have the added value of being the closest store and anyone in their right mind would choose Wal-Mart over a local store if all other things were the same.

And I don't believe anyone on this board when they say they don't shop at Wal-Mart out of principle...
