Who we talking about here? My wife apparently knows the story. I’m clueless.

Yah why would anyone build refineries near water. So stupid.

Those barges could run right into them!

So what you are telling us is that all of humanity should flock to areas where there are no natural disasters. The Sahara is about to be lit.

If you exaggerate ridiculously you might come to that conclusion, but no. Just stop rebuilding every other year in the areas that get wasted by storms. Some genius cited the Netherlands like it is some comparison because it is lowlands, much of which they claimed from former sea acreage - they get 30 inches of rain per year there and don't have hurricanes. Does not compare.

No area is completely sheltered from some bad weather, but if you put a risk heat map out there the gulf coast would not do well in comparison with most other places. I hate that people have to go through this, it sucks and I have lived through it multiple times. What I don't get is refusing to admit that it's a bad idea to stay. Multiple posts here already highlight that staying does not pay off in the long run.

May 1980 28 inches in 24 hrs which barely broke the record of the late 50's. Growth has been south in what used to be rice fields with marshes.

You must not be from Lake Chuck. I've seen cars floating down Bank St. more than once. I'm not talking about filled with plastic parts cars but 1960's and 70's cars.

I remember that flood well. My dad wanted to go check on a friend and had me drive him in my truck. I had water breaking over the hood.

There's no blame, I want them to be able to leave to be somewhere better/safer. It's risk mitigation. They shouldn't allow settlements in areas that will continue to flood. You can't correlate that with tornados or fires, it's not the same.

Sure you can. I can build a structure up and of durable material to mitigate alot of flood and hurricane risks. We have enough notice to prepare a property and attempt to protect against loss with a hurricane.

Can you say the same for a fire or tornado? No.

Pick your poison. I'd rather be able to prepare and mitigate as much as I can than live somewhere that presents the risks that other people have to live with every day.

Y’all need to learn about the two little Mexicans.

La Niña and El Niño

The ignorance surrounding “global warming” is comical.

I helped my dad pull wet carpet out of my parents' home on 10th St. Since there was 1/4 inch still in the house, it was much easier once it got going on that skim of water.

Yeah this and the sun are what I suspect are driving this. We’ve been burning fossil fuels for decades.

I get downvoted but I don’t believe in man made climate change. I just really think it’s been a lot wetter since August 2016. Growing up I only remember one event (TS Allison) that flooded us as bad.

And the drainage has been shite since Laura and Delta. Too much debris in ditches. 12" in a day is going to cause problems. However, had this occurred last May, I don't think it would have been to the extent that we saw yesterday.

LC doesn't continue to flood. We got a random storm that no one predicted that dropped 16" in 12 hours. Almost anywhere will flood from that.

let me tell you about the Netherlands...

If you did, you would note that it is tiny as hell and they engineered the crap out of it to make it work vs. just wondering why bad weather keeps happening with the same result. Also no tropical storms. Terrible comparison.

they have recently given up on the western 1/3rd.

fwiw north sea has some storms too.
