This should help the state of the LA workforce and attracting companies.

During its June meetings, instead of advancing a thoughtful plan to better support struggling students in achieving the graduation requirements, a majority of Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) members gave preliminary approval to a new regulation that would allow those students to receive a diploma by completing a teacher-graded portfolio. The proposed policy, which was opposed in the meeting by Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and discouraged by the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE), also comes with some lagniappe for schools: these students receiving diplomas will be considered “graduates” just like those meeting the graduation standard and will boost schools’ graduation rates and accountability ratings.

This is a great idea! Let’s just act like everyone is graduating and doing great, so that we look better!

Why do we have to keep lowering the bar for a certain demographic?

Why waste the tax dollars on schools and school boards. Just give the kid a diploma with a birth certificate. Same result and cheaper

Since statistics show people with a college degree make more money over time than those with just a high school diploma why don't we . . Drum roll,

Give everyone a college degree!

The racket in this doesn't just stop at the educators (who make up BESE) benefitting from "graduating" higher numbers. It also leads to more student debt at the college level, and revenue for the college, when remedial classes are part of the mix.

This is what the frick is wrong with schools, this is all they are worried about. They could give a flip less if the kids are actually learning anything thing.

I've always hated the concept of remedial classes at the college level. Bitch, if you didn't master high school English in high school, learn to weld.

I’ve never understood why people, myself included, refer to it as the “BESE Board” when the B stands for Board.

This will sink Louisiana deeper into the educational cesspool

Make kids earn a degree.

No one feels good about having it given to them.

Also, teachers are already burdened with bad kids. This will add to that burden.

And how would this plan help lure the best teachers?

All this does is handicap children for life. Long term, you’re essentially handicapping generations of children into poverty with zero chance of breaking the cycle.

In all honesty, we should all be championing this idea of qualitative measurement over the antiquated, factory-model multiple-guess tests students are still taking. I have my doubts as to how the portfolios will be evaluated in this case, but it should become the new standard for all students.

Current policy requires students to score an Approaching Basic level on at least three high school end-of-course LEAP tests: English (either English I or II); Math (either Algebra I or Geometry); and Either Biology or U.S. History (which will transition to Civics beginning next year). Statewide, 97% of high school seniors are meeting this requirement; 3% are not. The school districts with the highest percentage of students not meeting the standard are Tensas (18%), Morehouse (17%), Bogalusa (10%), St. John (8%), and Madison (8%).While poverty in these communities is a major obstacle, other school districts having even higher percentages of students in poverty have fewer students failing to meet the standard: St. Helena (less than 2%), St. Bernard (4%), East Carroll (2%), and Natchitoches (5%).

Wow.

Having a diploma or a degree equals "qualified" for a job in certain circles. Thus, there are interest groups that what to put that paper into people's hands and then they will be hired based on some DEI initiative. Some gov't employees can hardly read or write, but they have that paper from some weak college, and they get hired and promoted. You don't think NOLA is a complete basket case because of all the well qualified hires.
