I don't take Krav classes, but I'm slightly interested in hearing about it.

It strikes me as a good combo of fitness and practical skills, but the folks I've seen who are in the programs aren't cult-like and don't appear to wear dragon t-shirts, which surprised me.

Anyone have any recreational experience with it for fitness (not police/military training)?

I did it a few months. Loved it but schedule doesn't allow it now. The classes were a solid hour which can be tough. But its an intense hour, a full body workout and the fighting skills seem easily applicable to a bar fight.

Baton Rouge Krav Maga is pretty solid. They just built a new facility but I haven't been since they built it. I've taken a few classes with them because they also draw heavily from the Marines' MCMAP program. The price was a little prohibitive for me though.

I've been doing it for a couple of years now. Very practical an constantly evolving. I would highly recommend at least trying it. As stated above, the work out is great. We can't start fighting until we are spent. The idea is that you need to keep fighting after your adrenaline has run out. If you combine it with some BJJ you will be pretty legit.

So there is no ground aspect of Krav? Don't know much about it.

This is relevant to my interests. I've been waiting for a couple of lingering injuries to go away and I was thinking about giving it a shot. Seems like it wouldn't be a bad skill to have and didn't seem as gimmicky as other self defense stuff.

There is but if I had to pick a spot where it was lacking it is on the ground. We do a lot of preparation for multiple attackers. Wrapping up someone on the round while you have two others kicking you isn't a good idea. We do a lot of training to fight your way up if you are knocked to the ground. It is my believe that if you have some BJJ and have the right situation it will help you out.

I think it is the least gimmicky of all the so-called self defense martial arts because it is meant to de-escalate situations quickly. I would probably love it but my instructor's stand-up style is JKD and I do boxing.

I know, I'm joking. My point is that the culture and attitude of people who do it seem much more laid back than other popular self-defense and/or fitness programs. It is marketed as being accessible to a lot of different types of people, and I'm guessing that goes along with trying to have a broad appeal.

Apologies..Maybe it came across wrong..I was agreeing with the "affliction types" you pointed out that aren't interested in this style...

Agreed, seems a little subtle for those types.

My dad did it for 3 or 4 years when he was 50. Hurt himself working out, so he stopped. Said half of the guys in there were cops

This. Its designed for the average Joe to be able to walk away in one piece from an unavoidable fight. So its most focused on delivering solid quick strikes with fists and elbows. Few people will be good enough to use kicks in a barfight. There isn't so much grappling. There is some drills for disarming a knife or gun.

Most of all, its an exhausting workout. I thought I was in decent shape but wanted to vomit 20mins into my first session.

I learned how little water I was actually taking in my first go around. Now there is a difference between Krav and Commando Krav. My instructor has to teach us to get out of the fight for legal reasons. He will show the legit military style stuff to advanced guys on the side. For instance, there is a non lethal way to get out of a rape choke (someone on top choking). The lethal way is much more fun since you snap their neck. I've also received small arms training from the head of small arms of the IDF through Krav.

I'm dying to start taking classes. I'm just not physically in shape and wonder if I should be before I take classes.
