Started working out a few weeks ago after a 14 year hiatus. I'm almost positive I'm doing every free weight leg exercise properly. I've had a trainer watch me, and I've watched myself after looking at YouTube videos.

I am thinking it comes from squats, but they seem like a really good exercise, so I don't want to quit doing them. I started out gradually increasing weight. I'd increase weight when I could do 20 reps for 3 sets. My knees never hurt back then. Pretty sure I've found a good weight now, because I can only to less than 12 reps for each set, but my fricking kneecaps started hurting. They hurt all of the time now. Hurts the worst when I sit still.

I haven't done them this week, but should I just get right back to what I was doing? Have any of yall experienced this?

Take this time to work on your knuckles.

If your kneecaps feel rough like they have sand in the joints, it's runner's knee, which you can get without running. If they hurt above and below the kneecap, it's your tendons, which take longer than muscles to get used to the extra work.

It is sort of on the bottom half outside part of the kneecap. No sand feeling. Just feels like someone hit me in the kneecap with a pipe

Could it be bursitis?

I would suggest the typical things like rest, ice, and NSAIDs. I'd also suggest working on your flexibility, especially hamstrings and calves. Sometimes tightness there can lead to imbalances and pain in the knee.

I'd do one day of squats in the smith machine. I think it would be much easier to see if it's a problem with your form then

This or you can do what I did and just supplement. Krill oil, glucosamine and turmeric.

There's no need to stop blowing everyone.

get you some blue 7mm rheband knee sleeves. theyll keep your knees really warm and loose during your workout and they may help you out with your pain. i wont squat without them now.

Wrap the knees tightly with Ace bandages. My knees do the same thing if I don't wrap them before squatting.

Then you're doing it wrong.

You are supposed to go all the down so you can spring up.
