As a direct descendant of John C. Calhoun, we were not misguided.

If anyone wants to read a good biography of Davis, I would suggest Jefferson Davis: The Man and His Hour by William C. Davis (no relation to President Davis).

Unfortunately he was delt a bad hand with not enough man power and resources like the north, otherwise we in the south would be free.

Pretty sure we have some letters from him to Hugh somewhere up at the house. My mom's gonna wonder wtf I'm doing up in the attic digging through a metric frick ton of papers and books for them.

Well he did hire Roscoe and Enos to try to catch the Duke boys. That was pretty incompetent of him.

Just did some digging around my house and found admiral simmes memoirs from his service during the war. With a nice little note from father to son.

He at least had talent at appointing generals (unlike the leader up north).
He had a talent for appointing two generals: Albert Sidney Johnston and Robert E. Lee. Most of the rest were mediocre to below average. He stayed with Braxton Bragg longer than he should have because the two of them were friends. As a result, any hope of a successful Confederate counter-offensive in the western theater after the fall of Vicksburg was dashed on the slopes in front of Chattanooga.
John Pemberton should have never been near a high command position and John B. Hood was a general whose skills should have been confined to the divisional level. He did not have the temperament necessary to command an army.
