Not sure the stipulations, but they said you can call your mortgage company and auto lien holder and defer payments for up to 3 months. Hopefully this isn't overly abused. Praying for all of you!

FYI, saw this after Katrina, but it did report as a late payment on the credit report.

Also...if you do not have flood insurance...register on FEMA's website ASAP!

LINK

If you have family or loved ones that have no way to access a computer right now....register for them. This is what I did for my parents a little while ago. You will need SSNs/full names/ages for everyone in the home, their insurance information(if they had homeowner's insurance); address; mailing address; phone numbers; what kind of damage(there are options to check if you don't know yet); and financial information if you know it(so they could direct deposit any aid).

At least get it started...you can always go back and add what you don't know. You can set up correspondence to be mailed or emailed and set up for text notifications. I set all the stuff to be sent to my email/phone for right now so I can get any information asap since where they are at has no power.

Again....those without insurance that live in moderate to low flood risk areas that did NOT require flood insurance could be eligible for up to 33k in FEMA assistance. Many of the grants are first come first serve...so registering asap is very important.

Also ask questions like how the deferment will happen to make sure they don't demand all 3 payments in a month as opposed to 3 months added to the back end. And yes, ask them how it effects your credit.

No reason to downvote the OP! lol.

After Katrina I had everything deferred, it made a huge difference for me.

Just resumed normal payments 90 days later.

As the governor said yesterday, those without flood insurance can obtain up to but not more than $33,000 from FEMA. Detailed list of loss must be documented.

You have to be a resident in one of the four parishes listed as a disaster area. More parishes likely will be added. Not a lot of money but better than nothing.

This. You also HAVE to file a claim with any insurance companies you did have(homeowners, etc) as well. Even though it won't cover flood damage...FEMA will want paperwork from the insurance company stating that the damages are officially not covered by their policy.

And take lots of date stamped pics of everything before you even start moving/cleaning your home.

This may sound like a silly question and I'm at risk for getting blasted, but what if you lived in a flood zone with no flood insurance (house is paid off, area had not flooded in it's known history)

I think you can still qualify for some aid...it just won't be as much.

I think you would also still qualify for low interest loans as well.

My mother in law and father in law live in torrey pines. Any word on how high water got? They have been out of town since before flood. Just trying to get an idea of place is a total loss.

Not yet(you are referring to Torrey Pines the trailer park correct?). I saw in the large flood board that water levels in that area have gone down a good bit and should be low enough to check it out this evening but still some water at Oneal/Old Hammond.

My uncle is gonna take my family there in the morning if he can so they can see the extent of damage. There is another poster on here that also has family in torrey pines that has emailed me and we will contact each other with any updates.

Yep, lots of horror stories. People were getting 3-months of deferred payments but they were only deferred to the end of the 3 months not the end of the loan amortization. All of a sudden folks owed 3 full months of payments all at once.

That would be a grant...so free money.

You would still qualify for FEMA loans as well from what I'm reading.

With the application process as easy as it is, just apply and see what happens. It doesn't hurt to try.

The website seems to be for homes. Most of the questions we can't answer truthfully. We can't get to the business yet either. It's a complete loss. And our insurance agent likely suffered a complete loss also.
