If the criminal charges don't ruin his life I'm sure the civil suits will

True.

Anyone know what he was actually convicted of?

The victim's family agreed to the sentence. The judge told him that he was lucky because he would have sentenced him to more.

How are sentences determined in cases like this?

Not sure. The article I read (WBRZ) said the conviction carries a 25 year sentence, but Crowson's family said they were Ok with him only serving a third of it. I wouldn't have been; that's for damn sure.

Nor I.

I guess I am just surprised that the Crowson's have that much input into the sentencing.

Victim's families often decide whether murderers are up for the death penalty. If the family doesn't want it the state won't go for it.

Wow they are much more forgiving people than me. Hopefully he does not kill anyone again when he gets out.

Sure are quick to assume a 4th DWI. Unlike the people who have not been caught or hurt anyone while drinking and driving yet, did go through seeing someone die because of something he did. He knows he did wrong and he's been through a fair share of harassment. However no matter who brought him down, he never drank or even got behind the steering wheel of a car. I know this because I am one of his friends. Even in the pouring rain he rode his bicycle to work and never once complained that he could not drive. Another thing I'd like to point out is he never had a drink of alcohol since this occurred. Even at his 30th in NOLA he managed to keep a big smile on his face while others around him partook in the alcohol. What Joey did was horrible and I can see why people are angry. But how many of you have gotten behind the wheel after drinking? This could have happened to you or someone very close to you. It was a fatal mistake. Nothing will bring Nathan back, but please think of this as people needing to face the reality that NO ONE should drink and drive. Period. I only hope everyone learns from this. For those who keep assuming Joey has no remorse or that he will indeed pick up another drink, you are all wrong. The harassment and hate may never go away, but we can only pray for those that continue to do so. End of rant.
