Jobs: When/If to Call Re: Application Status

Last week I applied for a job, it's in the field I want, with an organization I really want to work with. I have a contact within the organization, and last week he talked to the hiring personnel who told him I would be in the pool of considered applicants.
From him I got the name and email of the hiring personnel, and I sent her a quick email thanking her for the consideration, got no response. Fast forward to this week, I sent another email just to see if they had a timeline in place for the hiring process, no response.
So my question for the OT job gurus; when, or should I even, call the person?

I'd slow down and let the process work. You're not helping things along right now, just fulling up inboxes. If it's even a decent sized company it can take time to setup interviews, etc

Squeaky wheel gets the grease so every hour on the hour.

I usually don't call them. If they want to move forward, they will call you.

It takes a while for them to go through the candidates and set up interviews and shite. Just chill for a couple weeks.

makes you seem desperate if you keep contacting them.

I don't want to work for that guy. He blows goats. I have proof.

You'll start to look desperate if you flog emails at someone you haven't met yet.
ETA: a rule of thumb I use is if they say 2 weeks, give them a month. Things generally move slow.

I'm not planning on sending any more. I'm just not usually this neurotic about an application. So having multiple people telling me to hold off is a good thing.

The first e-mail was fine. The second email was annoying. I would've waited a minimum of 2 weeks, if not longer before reaching back out after hearing nothing from the initial e-mail. The hiring process for some companies is drawn out.
ETA: I'm in the middle of a job search myself right now due to the Mrs. moving for a residency starting in July. I know it can be very frustrating, but patience is key.

The company i currently work for took 6 weeks to offer me the job. During that time i didn't contact them once.

Good call. Let them come to you.
I understand it can be hard not to obsess over a job you applied for that you really want.
I've been there.

Just said your resume isn't thrown out in the first 5 minutes. In no way means you will get an interview

You were impatient about a job that isn't filled in a week? Most jobs are required to be open a certain number of days before they review applications. Unless you are referred by a C level officer, it is lucky for my company to hire you 3 weeks after the CLOSING DATE for a position.

You did fine. A week is not annoying when there was no response.
Give it a week or two if you can and reach out to your contact if nothing comes back. You have a right to be informed so you can plan to move on if needed.
People saying two emails spread a week apart is annoying are wrong.

What's wrong with enthusiasm?
If I was hiring someone I would hire the person most qualified and most interested.
I would send an email to the boss

Bad idea. Your best bet is to keep in contact with your friend to see if and when they have started seeing people coming in for interviews, and/or if the job has closed.

I pretty much expect every applicant I interview to take the time to ask me what my time frame is for making a decision on the hire. Any decent company/manager should have this time line established. Did you ask them this?
