Job Interview Question

I'm going to a job interview next week after making it through the phone interview round. I spoke directly to my potential boss and he was very honest and candid about the job/company. It seems like a good job and the previous person in this position left on their own will, not fired. The boss told me that this person still works in the same city but left for a higher position after working 5 years or so for the company.
Would it be out of line for me to ask for contact information for the previous employee? I would like to talk to him just to get a better idea of the job/company than what the company describes. Being that he left on his own will, I don't think he would be negative in his assessment.
Just wondering how the potential employer would react to me asking to get in touch with him.

That would probably be the oddest thing you could ask a future employer

Seems really strange to me

I've left a few jobs on my own will and can think of plenty negative things to say

It's making it look like you're checking up on his story about the ex-employees exit being peaceful and straight forward

What?

Is this a serious question. If you want the job, don't do it

I didn't realize it would be such an odd question. I don't currently live in that city and don't know much about the company other than online research. It seems that if the company still had a good relationship with the previous employee then they wouldn't mind us talking. The company wants references on me, it would be nice to have a reference on the company other than what the insiders are saying.
I appreciate the replies.

That's what the interview is for. I doubt the company will want to give out a previous employees information, mostly because the previous employee doesn't want his information given out.

You won't get his contact info or the job.

Don't do that

I'd avoid asking them for that

The fact that you're wondering if asking that is right or wrong makes you a moron and you probably won't get the job anyway

I don't think it will go over well, but I appreciate the OP for not being submissive to employers.
If you're interested in finding a good company to work for you want to make sure they don't have high turn over and a lot of disgruntled ex-employees.

(1) Is this your first "real" job
(2) If the previous employee has something negative to tell you, he'll contact you...
