For those of you who are not familiar, Jefferson Parish is one of the few places that still uses a "district" system for rec sports, where you play for your district playground. Many of us grew up with such a system, but over the years, a lot of places have turned to more of an open enrollment model, where everyone plays in a centralized system that splits up into teams for each sport.

Just like NOLA people put a huge emphasis on where they went to high school, where you played "park ball" is a big point of pride for a lot of adults.

So... the thought of removing team sports from 6 parks has a lot of people upset. And of course, the first one up is Lemon... which is in about the closest thing to a ghetto you will find in East Jefferson.

quote:

Bazile said that in 2021, Lemon Playground had 106 kids participate in youth sports the entire year. At Girard Playground, which has a similar sized staff, that number was over 2,500.

So clearly they want to make some changes, which may be warranted.

But... what do they want to do with Lemon?

quote:

According to concepts developed by the parish, the gym at Lemon Playground would become a cheer and tumbling academy, with year-round programming. And its field would be converted into a lacrosse complex.

OK... they have lost their minds. They are wanting to put cheer, tumble, and lacrosse, three of the most white bread, expensive sports there is... in the middle of the ghetto?

Besides Lemon, you also have Delta, Bright, Avondale, Bridge City, and Rosethron on the chopping block. Delta would become a baseball and softball academy. Bright will become a huge tennis complex.

Funny how I see no mention of Pontiff

Wonder why, I mean you literally have to cross the tracks to get to Pontiff

Old Metairie baw, guess they still got lots of kids in old Metairie.

Not surprised about Delta. That area has gotten big time old. The Catlick school by there, OLDP, closed a few years ago, and the next closest one, St. Mary Magdalan, is closing this year. Public schools are less used as well.

Was a little more surprised by Bright. But I don't know how that area is doing.

JPRD’s biggest issue is that the people In charge -until recently- have kept the mind set this is how we always have done it. In addition, the substantial bloat of JPRD employees who in essence compete to see who can do the least amount of work.

The constant complaining of losing players to outside teams, AAU/ Travel baseball, is solely based on the ineptitude to adapt and make a quality product that makes leaving for outside entities a nonissue.

Why do you care? If it’s open enrollment, people who live there can go somewhere else if they don’t like it.

If it fails, then it’s no different that what it is today

It’s called equity. Little black children need the opportunity to cheer, tumble, and play Lacrosse, honkey.

Except for the money spent to build a new facility that won't get used.

What's funny is the people who live there - the little black children - don't want that.

quote:

“You have taken away the sports that we are accustomed to. We want our football. We want our basketball. We want our track. We want our volleyball,” one attendee said. “Ms. Sheng, we don’t want what you guys are offering. We don’t want it.”

they also don't want to play sports neither as evidenced by their total annual enrollment. Blame the fricking parents.

Is that the parishes responsibility or the parents? And how is a playground for younger kids going to help grown men?

Not as familiar with the playground layouts over there, wouldn't those kids just go down to Jefferson Playground? Is there another playground in between they would go to?
Would be awesome to see them all go to Pontiff, I bet that community would make sure Lemon stays open

How are "cheer" and "tumbling" (gymnastics) expensive sports? I can see maybe lacrosse having some equipment costs but what are the costs involved with cheer and gymnastics?
