Forward-looking: Japan's decades-long mission to transmit solar power collected in space back to Earth could move a step closer to reality in just a few years. A public-private partnership wants to start a trial sometime around 2025 using small satellites launched into orbit.
quote:

An American physicist first proposed the concept of launching solar panels into space to generate electricity in 1968. The idea is to turn the captured solar power into microwaves before sending them to ground-based stations over 22,000 miles away to be converted into electricity.

Nikkei reports that in the 1980s, Japan was the first country in the world to successfully transmit power via microwaves in space. Kyoto University professor Naoki Shinohara took over the group that achieved this feat, and in 2009 it was able to transmit power from an airship flying at an altitude of 30 meters (98.4 feet) to a mobile phone on the ground.

The biggest experiment will take place in the middle of the century (fiscal 2025) when small satellites will be used to see if they can send power from outer space to ground-based receiving stations.

Clean and unlimited renewable energy is an appealing prospect for countries, especially as more companies aim for net-zero carbon dioxide emissions. But the biggest issue will likely be the cost. Generating the equivalent of one nuclear reactor (1 gigawatt) would require a square of space-based solar panels measuring 2 km (1.2 miles) on each side. It's estimated that an array of this size would cost more than $7.1 billion.

Wait a second -

We are going to solve global warming by focusing and beaming MORE solar energy into the atmosphere?

It's been a long time since I took thermodynamics, but this math does not seem to work out

Wasn't this a plot line to The Man With the Golden Gun?

Agreed….no way that would work. Besides, I read on the internet that within about 6 months, nuclear fission will supply all of our power needs.

Interesting. Its worth experimenting with. You never know what advances like this will lead to and how smart people can make it cost effective. Surprised this isn't something that Musk would be involved in given SpaceX and the amount of launches they do, and then Tesla.

Im no scientist, but the OP’s quote of the article says the solar power will be converted to microwaves before transmitting down to earth:

“The idea is to turn the captured solar power into microwaves before sending them to ground-based stations over 22,000 miles away to be converted into electricity.”

What happens when microwaves hit polarized molecules, like say water in the air?

Right, I get that. It's all still energy added to the planet, which will be converted mostly to heat by its use, which will be partially retained by the planet/atmosphere, which will contribute to GLOBALLLL WARMING

Now, the idea of wireless energy transfer is always intriguing to study but I generally don't like it. In this example, getting the satellite gimbal screwed up will make it non-productive at best and a suped up orbital people cooker at worst.

We have a green project that literally boils the atmosphere!!!

So very many of these modern energy projects are just government money grifts that don't pass the slightest sniff test.

this is how you get real manmade global warming...this and regular solar panels.

That sounds like a giant laser from the sky. What could go wrong?

Why not use a big-assed magnifying glass up there to focus the solar energy to a collector of sorts on earth? Seems easy.

It will come through the Earth’s atmosphere as microwaves, so the only downside is that it will boil all the water and we’ll have no rainfall, which means every day will be clear and sunny for a couple of weeks.

very important to figure this shite out now. this type of technology could be used to help colonize other planets. the only way to ensure the survival of the human species is to get off of earth.

Now this is a cause I can get behind for technological exploration.

I think you missed the part where it's not going to be transmitted as solar energy.
