That's kind of the low hanging fruit I already know about. But what about the actual products? Are they inherently deleterious to human health outside of preventing starvation? Any literature you know of that would touch on this?

There has been no scientific definitive proof that GMOs are deleterious to our health. The biggest stigma against GMOs are two issues: 1) Europe used America's use of GMOs as a means to prevent us from underselling their farmers via the Precautionary System; and 2) most GMOs do not bear seeds that are capable of reproducing - giving GMO producers huge annual profits because farmers have to purchase them each year. The liberal agenda gets in an uproar because they believe these scientific advances, which takes millions or billions to develop, should be given out free to indigent nations. All of this creates negative press for GMOs...

The only bad thing about GMOs that I am aware of is their use allows for more heavy application of herbicide/pesticide which can result in additional runoff and water contamination.

Agribusiness degree from UGA FWIW.

Spot on.

One other instigator in the anti-GMO crowd, and an important one that brings lots of money to support the liberal nuts on this issue, is the organic food companies.

These companies - many of the Whole Foods supply network - are looking to increase their market shares. They are fully aware that GMO food is not harmful to humans but they stoke the fire of public fear and misinformation solely to demonize non-organic food products. They are spending BIG dollars to support the activists who are trying to scare people away from GMO food. And they are doing this for the sole purpose of trying to drive up sales of their products.

Their behavior is pathetic really, when you consider most of the leaders of the organic food companies claim to possess business ethics that are far superior to Monsanto, Kelloggs, PepsiCo, etc.

Mankind has been genetically modifying crops since the dawn of agriculture.

Every god damn cultivated vegetable is a GMO. They have been bred for generations to obtain desirable traits. Using cutting-edge technologies to introduce these traits is not dangerous. So make sure to remember that all of those "organic, non-GMO" fruits and veggies that look fricking identical are in fact GMO (and most likely not organic). Nothing in this world is black and white, especially the intricate workings of genetics.

There is a difference between selectively breeding and propagating a plant/animal to have a desired trait and a GMO. A GMO requires genetic manipulation of the DNA, like taking the genes from a caterpillar and putting it into a soybean to make it resistant to herbicide. (roundup ready)

Um, how else do you manipulate DNA if not genetically?

They are fine. Just a bunch of hippies in protest. Fear mongering.

the fact that Monsanto owns a lot of GMO patents is one of the reasons the loonies on the left have started a campaign against GMOs. The GMO idiocy is as bad as the anti-vaccine idiocy.

Maybe I should have said "alter" using biotechnology as opposed to sexual propagation?

Or are they truly just evil tactics by corporations like Monsanto in order to increase riches for a few billionaires?

1) It isn't evil to increase profits.
2) Monsanto is publicly traded and is not owned by just "a few billionaires".
3) There's nothing wrong with GMO's and in fact they may do a great deal of good.

I don't think so necessarily. It just depends on how it's been modified. And I think perhaps it's not necessarily the genetic modification that makes it bad for us, but the other things they do to the crops.

For instance, if they modify corn so that it is resistant to tons of round-up, insecticides, etc, I think maybe it's not the genetic modification that's harmful, but the tons of chemicals they spray on the plant that's not good for us.

But that's just my opinion, and I think the food industry will do whatever it can to increase profits and they don't really care about human health.

It's kind of the important low hanging fruit though. Without gmo, you aren't here.

Well I just don't think that's true. I think it's a cost thing. They could just expand and use a lot more farmland, but that would be more expensive than GMO farming.
