Yeah. Baton Rouge is terrible.

From a kid's point of view, I don't think there is such a thing as a bad zoo.
The BR Zoo is great for young kids especially with the playground that makes for a good break point. We go every few months and spend 3-4 hours. My two make it about 80% through before they pass out. I haven't brought them to Audubon Zoo yet since I know they will likely fall asleep mid way through due to the size.

Area 51 Trampoline Park is my kids current favorite.
They're usually booked up, so go online the day before and buy tickets for a time slot.

Baton Rouge has a zoo?

Rather make the drive to New Orleans. The Audubon Zoo is also going through a pretty massive construction plan right now so a good portion is closed.

A lot of their animals are out on loan for breading right now, but we had a good time there this weekend. Just walking around with the family, riding the train around the grounds....it was a good time. I will say the food leaves a TON to be desired though.

Seriously?!?!? That sucks! They were awesome. I haven't been in 2 years.
Yep, the federal government passed a couple regulations regarding elephant exhibits that's caused them to slowly be phased out of most zoos.
1. You can't add another elephant unless your elephant habitat is of a certain size and meets certain criteria.
Only a handfull of the largest zoos in the country meet their new standards.
2. You cannot have fewer than 2 elephants in an enclosure.
Basically, since you can't add another elephant, if one of your elephants dies, you have to give the other one away to another zoo. That's what happened in BR since one of their elephants was already ancient. Supposedly, BREC is exploring options to renovate the zoo to get elephants back, but they are not going to do anything while their are also proposals being thrown around to move the zoo entirely.

I agree. Not a good zoo, but my 2 year old loves it so it's something fun for the kids.

Proposals to move the zoo? Where?

Proposals to move the zoo? Where?
Basically, for the amount of money the zoo would have to spend to do some of the renovations they want to do to bring it up to par with what other zoos have been doing around the country (new elephant habitat, more interactive exhibits, more indoor classroom and exhibit space, ect) they could almost build a new zoo in an area that's closer to where most of their customers are (i.e. south of I-10/12). It's just being talked about now. No plans have been drawn up or specific sites looked at as possible candidates.

McKnight has talked before about the possibility of moving the zoo’s entrance from Thomas Road to the more-traveled Highway 19, where the newly revamped Greenwood Community Park’s entrance is located.
It would certainly help visibility. But what about moving the zoo entirely? For McKnight and Frost, that option isn’t off the table.
“Some of the questions [we got from] community leaders were: If you are going to invest that much money [in renovating the zoo], are you sure that’s where you need to invest it?” Frost says. “Is that the best business model for the zoo to be where it currently is? That’s something we have to figure out—if we spend this much money right here, how many more people do we think we will bring in? What if those great amenities are somewhere else—do we feel that our numbers would go up?”
These are more long-term considerations for the zoo, they say. But Frost cites statistics that show a disparity in visitors from around the region.
The zoo’s 70807 ZIP code represents less than 1% of its visitors, he says. The three nearest ZIP codes represent only about 3% each. The highest number of visitors come from Denham Springs, Zachary, Walker and ZIP codes between LSU and the Country Club of Louisiana south of Interstate 12.
“You look at hotels, and it’s all about location, location, location,” Frost says. Location can also be key for zoos. As a destination park, the struggle is providing a service for residents in close proximity while acknowledging that the space serves as an attraction for the parish and surrounding areas.
If the zoo were to move, McKnight says, the property would be converted to a use that nearby residents want.
