Is Jiujitsu popular in your area?

Over the last year I have been seeing a ton of guys in my hometown area taking up jiujitsu. It seems like it happened overnight. What gives? Is it the new cross fit?

No...no one likes Chinese food where I live

Not at all. There's not much satisfaction in being a white belt. Large learning curve.

Yes. I would like to try it. No eye contact though.

It's gained popularity. I've been doing it for a few years. It's a hell of a workout, different kinda cardio than what most people are used to, and some find stress relief in choking other people to sleep.

It's been pretty popular for years. I was taking it in 08/09.
My joints are too loose to do it for exercise. I was done after having both shoulders slip in the same month.
My old arse will stick to some ghey arse looking leg lifts and some half court basketball.

No, but we got some Judy Chop masters where I’m at.

For losers from high school who didn't go to college and were picked on.

The heyday for jits was in the mid to late 2000’s which coincidentally was when UFC was kinda hitting it’s peak. It probably would have been back in the 1990’s when Royce was crushing everyone in the early UFC but nobody really knew what it was then and there were no instructors.
I’ve been training for over 10 years. It’s still popular to a degree but nowhere near as popular as it was when I started. We probably average a handful of new students a month but our target has shifted to kids programs. It also helps to have multiple disciplines under one roof like judo, wrestling, boxing, or mt because we don’t just hand out belts in BJJ and lots of people lose interest when they are white belts for over a year.

it's something that "soft" millennial guys are doing.

It's been around me personally since birth. My uncle is a 7th degree in kito ryu jujitsu, 4th degree in Judo, and 1st degree in Aikido and Hapkido.
My cousin (his son) is a world champion BJJ black belt and has been training since we were little. He broke his leg in the final match of qualifying for the junior olympics team in Judo.
A lot of famous people are getting into it more now, though my uncle has trained a lot over the years before it became cool. Interesting fact, he trained Ed O'Neill (Al Bundy), who is a legit black belt in BJJ.

I still think the best way to teach a kid to defend himself, especially in a school bullying type situation is to learn straight up boxing.
