I was always told this by my parents but never given a reason why. Will it mess something up?

It's not bad as long as you can catch it

When I first started driving, if I was putting in about $10 or less I would just leave it running. As I've grown up I always turn it off.

I was also told never to leave it running but wasn't really given a reason, I guess I just got in the habit eventually of turning it off regardless.

I doubt it. I think it's one of those things like telling everyone to put your phone on airplane mode for take-off and landing.

my father in law leaves his running

I was told for gas engines to turn them off, for diesel no need too

dont really understand why a gas engine would need to be turned off, there arent sparks when an engine is running and im not pouring gas on the engine...

I think in the old days maybe there was an issue. I do it all the time now tho.

I guess there is always that .00001% chance of something igniting.

Cool. I know it's gonna sound really stupid but the big reason I don't wanna kill mine while pumping is because of the hassle of turning back on my Bluetooth every time I restart my car

every newer vehicle has a fuel tank pressure monitoring sensor that's a part of the evaporative emissions system. Some are a little more sensitive than others and may turn on the check engine light.
If you've never had the light come on because of pumping with the vehicle running then you shouldn't have any problems.

Old days was because of the risk of explosions from the vapors exiting the fuel tank. That's pretty much a thing of the past now that engine vacuum pulls those vapors into the motor.

I do on occasion. The exhaust is on the other side, pumps don't splash gas like they used to, and the rubber shields on the pump nozzle limit vapor diffusion.....

I do it everytime I pump gas. Except at Costco because they come and ask you to turn it off.

I leave mine running, both my gas and diesel vehicles. Starting engines is hard on them.

Back in the day, you could have a shitload of fuel vapors make their way under the hood and into the air intake on the carb and maybe cause a backfire. With the new stuff, I don't see how that could happen.

Turning engine off and taking keys out of ignition would slow down a car jacker.
