Is "Hitting Rock Bottom" an overused term for fighting addiction?

People act as if this is the only true way to recovery. It may apply to some, but it doesn't mean it automatically apply to all.

Everyone has a different rock bottom, some are harder than others.

For many, without rock bottom, the negatives of using don't outweigh the positives. For me, when my girlfriend and family told me that I would be excommunicated from them if I continued to abuse cocaine, that was my rock bottom. Otherwise, I'd probably still be using instead of being 19 months clean.

It's the moment when the addict stops bullshiting him/herself. Doesn't have to be a tragic situation.

Meh I think it is sort of, in the sense that most times you can keep digging as long as the itch for that high is still there.

Many ppl just die rather than choose hit that “bottom” idk this topic makes me mis some friends.

Objective rock bottom is death.

Individual rock bottom is just the lowest you'll allow yourself to go. Even then it gets compromised

A lot of people miss rock bottom and go straight to the grave. That said, it is one less trashy person. So depends on your pov

I've posted this before but I was a pretty bad functioning alcoholic for over a decade. I got drunk every single day. I never hit "rock bottom" like losing my job or getting a DUI. I just had a daughter that was getting old enough to realize that her dad was a drunk. She was worth enough to me to change my lifestyle.

I always just thought it was a TV euphemism for sucking dick for coke.

Definitely overused. People think they have hit rock bottom, but then they realize there's always a trap door..

Objectively, yes, death would be rock bottom.

you don't have to have something awful happen to you to change on a dime.

I have a friend who was left paralyzed after he drove drunk home one night. He drank on and off for a years following that but then one day he checked himself into a rehab center and hasn't drank since. He goes to meetings everyday.

I'm not standing on some moral high ground. I just never got caught.

Think the proverbial rock bottom is a plateau, not necessarily a hole. It's different for everyone and we kind of hang out and live on this plateau which has its own ups and downs. I'm pretty sure none of us expected to ever get there, but we dug in and made it home for a while anyway.

I had substance abuse problems from my late teens until my mid 30s. Definitely not something I'm proud of. I'm not the poster child of what people expect when they visualize people like that. I came from a solid middle class family, have 2 college degrees, excelled in my field yet had this anchor around my neck for 15 years.

Live and learn I suppose.

I was like some in this thread. I was a functioning alcoholic. Held my job, never got arrested and thought I was maintaining a good house. Until the day my wife packed her bags and was standing at the door with my 11 year old and said they were gone if I didn’t stop drinking. As far as an outside influence affecting my life that was my rock bottom. By the way my wife had been asking me to stop drinking for about 3 years. I just thought I could control it. I couldn’t admit I was drinking entirely too much.

Rock bottom would be if your girlfriend left you, your family disowned you, you lost your job, house, and car, went completely broke, and maybe got arrested for DUI or possession or worse.
