I've never heard of anyone outside the United States being diagnosed with this.

I saw a commercial for it the other day. Apparently they're prescribing ADHD medicine for it. I wonder if a doctor has ever suggested they just put the fricking fork down

Higher incidence in western countries, but on the rise in non-western countries.

Sisters roommate in college had a form of it. She would starve herself for days barely eating anything, then random nights she would raid the fridge and eat an insane amount of food. Like she would eat an entire cake or an entire jar of Nutella at 3 in the morning. I didn't think it was a real thing either until then.

I'm average sized. But every once in awhile, I'll have an uncontrollable urge to eat a lot to punish myself. And by uncontrollable, I mean like watching someone else type shite. I'll usually muttering no or some shite. Usually when I'm depressed.so yes, I can believe there are people out there who suffer from a more serious version of that.

Yes.

Has to do with dopamine overloading the brain's natural reward system. Low serotonin levels are likely in play as well.

eta- but it isn't just over-eating or eating unhealthy foods. It's people that shovel food down their throat for extended periods of time

I'm amazed at what people can eat.

But I feel really bad for fat people. Especially the ones that I see eating alone in restaurants. I feel really bad for them:
Sometimes I order them an appetizer or dessert; but then feel even more guilty that I'm actually doing more harm than good and contributing to the problem.
