Holy shite.

quote:

One of the Air Force Special Operations Command’s brand-spanking-new AC-130J Ghostrider Gunships has to be scrapped due to a test flight that went horribly awry. Luckily nobody was harmed but the $115 million dollar highly-modified Super Hercules will never fly again.

quote:

While being operated at roughly 15,000ft, “the aircraft exceeded the targeted angle of sideslip until it departed controlled flight,” the report states. It “momentarily inverted, before being recovered after losing approximately 5,000ft of altitude.”

I have a question. This guy asked when a 4 prop plane was used in combat? Don't we have AC130s seeing alot of action in last 10 years?

Thread in question About Russian Bombing ISIS

eta: Nevermind He said Bomber. I was confused. I'm a dumdum

so what happens ? did it put too much stress on some parts of the plane where it's not safe to fly again?

So basically they were just along for the ride for a while there and are lucky to be alive. I realize that's not funny, but the way they put it is kind of amusing.

Sounds like in their recovery, they bent the air frame and damaged the wings and flaperons to the point where the whole thing is a total loss.

The comments section offered these:

quote:

It's possible the aircraft did receive very real structural damage but didn't fail catastrophically

quote:

It went over it’s designed load limits. The airframe was compromised.

Found on ebay: 2015 USAF Ghostrider Gunship One of a kind Babied...never tracked or raced...never wintered. New wings and recently replaced OEM flight crew buckets. $50 million OBO. No tire kickers, no mavericks.

Extreme stress on the airframe. The structure of the airframe when loaded down are not meant to sustain maneuvers like that. It's basically like bending the chassis in your car. And the flight engineers that were kicked out of the AC-130s are laughing right now.

I hope to god that the loaders were all strapped in because that's a very dangerous situation. If you've been inside an AC-130 you should know how scary it would be to go inverted in one.
