re: Inspiring and Terrifying Video about the Future

Is there an example of a type 3 civilization in Sci-Fi? The Ancients from Stargate maybe or The Q?

Babylon 5 didn't address energy usage like the Kardashav(?) scale but the overall theme was the evolution of civilizations. The truly advanced eventually gave up their physical bodies and became beings of energy and consciousness. The S4 finale shows a fast forward to the last human leaving the earth system just as the sun dies out. The series is very uneven though, there were plenty of individual episodes poorly written and poorly acted. You have to be able to stand back and view it in its entirety to see the greatness.

re: Inspiring and Terrifying Video about the Future
quote:

"to a type 2-3 civilization we are ants. Have you ever stopped traveling down the highway when you see an ant pile and say hello."

I parleyed with the Ant Queen once. The meal they set before me was less than adequate, and they simply nattered on and on about me leaving more sugar out for them, so I turned by fiery beam of disintegration upon them, smiting their kingdom with fire and boot.
The survivors swore vengeance upon our race, which is why they keep popping up in your yard.

Sorry.

What if there is already a Type III civilization and we are just one of those nature reserves he mentioned.

Not liking that whole "one world government, one language" bit but I'll save that for the Poli board.

civilization after the singularity will be so radically different than anything we're familiar with that it's pointless to compare it with our current model. Just roll with it and see where it takes us.

Jumping into something of this scale with no testing or expectations is pretty unwise.

The video mentioned the EU and NAFTA as steps down that path and if we don't like how that is going, why should we want to continue? I don't want to be like Germany who is constantly dragged down by the likes of Greece and who has to bolster up the likes of Spain, Italy, Ireland etc.

The big dogs have the most to lose in these situations and who is to say that another actor (China mayhaps) would not want to take advantage of us letting our guard down?

To the poster with the ant pile analogy:

It seems like a Typ2 or 3 would have something like a "Prime Directive" to abstain from communication with civilizations at lower technology levels similar to that of star trek.

After Singularity hits, we'll all likely be able to speak multiple languages, and English will likely become true vernacular, due to how widespread it already is and its more logical than Chinese characters are.

Singularity will also mow down government walls almost completely. If you have a friend in Shanghai, you could upload yourselves to it and meet at a bar in the Singularity.

Considering there is already talk of using a 3-d printer to create first skin and vein sections, followed shortly by organs, I doubt the "machines" will be the metallic creatures we envision. There will be created organisms among other things.

I'll see your doomer video and raise you a well researched treatise on exponential growth and how it ends.

The problem with Martensen is he fails to take in account another exponential trend, Technological advancement.

While his concerns are legitimate, urgent, real and here; they fail to recognize the counter insurgence of inventions and innovations that are on the same exponential growth trend.

Finally someone who gets it. I like OML, the world needs more people like him to think big and advance things. All of that said, we are going to be lucky to be running industrial civilization anything like we are now in 20 years.

Yeah, this guy is a few years off, but the overarching message still applies.

Par, technology is not energy. That is my problem with the cornucopians.
