For anyone interested, it was a Frozen bubble "gun" with Elsa on the side.
quote:

BRIGHTON, Colo. -- A 5-year-old Colorado girl was suspended from kindergarten on Monday for bringing a gun to her elementary school.

It sounds alarming, but the weapon was a bubble gun, a popular plastic toy sold at stores across the country.

The girl’s mother, who goes by Emma, said she was shocked when she got a call from Southeast Elementary School telling her she needed to pick up her daughter and take her home.

“If they had contacted me and said can you make sure this doesn’t happen again, we just want you to be aware, I think that would have been a more appropriate way to handle the situation. Could we have a warning? It blows bubbles,” she said.

This isn't the first time a bubble gun hascaused problems for a kindergarten student.

Emma said she would never have knowingly let her daughter bring the toy to school. She said her daughter put it in her backpack without telling her. But the school is sticking to its guns, calling the toy a safety concern and a classroom distraction.

The school responds:
quote:

While we hear and understand the parents of this student being concerned about this discipline in light of the student's age and type of item, this suspension is consistent with our district policy as well as how Southeast has handled similar situations throughout this school year. This has involved similar situations where students have brought items such as Nerf guns to school and also received one-day suspensions. The bringing of weapons, real or facsimile, to our schools by students can not only create a potential safety concern but also cause a distraction for our students in the learning process. Our schools, particularly Southeast because of past instances with students bringing fake weapons to school, make a point of asking parents to be partners in making sure students are not bringing these items to school. This includes asking parents to check backpacks.”

Tax dollars hard at work. Anyone want to take the odds her permanent record will say she was suspended for bringing a weapon to school?

Stupid rule. But rules are rules. I was scared to death in elementary school because I realized there was a water gun in my bag. Like legit scared all day as if I had marijuana on me or something.

Good.

If pointing and shooting with your fingers can get you expelled, so should a bubble gun.

I freaked out one day at school when I realized I accidentally brought a screwdriver kit that I had in it over the weekend.

I didn't tell ANYONE.

If she had brought a weapon to school, I would agree with you.

She's in kindergarten. I don't think she has much to worry about.

I don't really have a problem with this and the parent is at fault. Everyone knows public schools have a zero-tolerance policy for guns of any kind at school, even if it is harmless.

Stupidity, lack of common sense, and the inability to think or use logic is rampant in our education system all the way from K5 to the university level. And this is reflected by the young "educated" idiots we see today. This is one of the primary reasons this country is going to shite.

The inability to follow rules and the sense of entitlement that follows is a primary reason for this country's problems. The story in the OP is a perfect example.

Zero tolerance is zero tolerance. Applying the rules equally is not a reason this country is going to shite.

We have an obligation to break stupid rules. In Nazi Germany being Jewish was against the rules. Should we have just told jews that "Sorry, rules are rules."

God forbid any kids shoot pens at the ceiling like when we were in high school. The asbestos drop tiles used to be full of these.

You've got a point and what you say is true. Still, this is a 5 yr old who snuck a toy into her backpack. Yes, give some sort of punishment for breaking the rules, but to suspend her is just absurd. And the problem is the school admin is too stupid to realize this fact.

Zero tolerance for the intent of the rule. A bubble gun wasn't why the rule was written. It in no way resembles a real gun.

Why couldn't they just confiscate it and tell the parents?

That's what would happen in Logictown, USA.

I actually got suspended in 3rd grade for bringing this magazine to school and showing it to friends in the bathroom. I'll never forgive "David L." for ratting on me for no fricking reason. What a doucher. I took it from my dad and I specifically remember him not being mad at all
