They aren't as needed. They have work every day. It's just that they aren't hourly. They basically split the labor profit on jobs with the shop so they are paid on 1099. If a job pays 4 hours and they do it in 2 they still get paid for all 4 hours.
He stated his reasons for firing the guy. Too many redos which gets expensive and eats up profit. Paint and clear aren't cheap plus the cost of having the booth tied up for a redo.

Lay-off or firing?
Firings usually take care of themselves & if the employee didn't know they "could" be fired or warranted being fired then they're clueless.
Layoffs are a different story. I wouldn't help this person or bring him back based on these texts & I'd tell him so.

What's sad is there is a guy that works with me who is completely incompetent. Comes in late, calls in, he's completely lazy, goofs off all day, doesn't do anything well or right. But he's black so the black managers look out for him and the white managers are afraid to do anything out of fear of being labeled racist. He knows this so he just continues to ride that gravy train every day.
