I've been high performing my entire life (school, work, athletics), but when promotions come up I tend to start doubting everything, and in the past I've self sabotaged.

I've been offered multiple management positions with the company I work for and keep finding good reasons to turn them down (they all have required large moves with 3 kids).

For anyone that has experienced this (yeah I know, stop being a bitch), how did you overcome it. It's a company that will go public within 3-4 years so I need to get in the position to get shares for a hefty buyout.

I train and manage people as is, it just seems when the immediate prospect of the sole responsibility falling on me I falter internally.

Everyone is an imposter. Just egos fronting with each other. 99% of people are completely full of shite.

You fight through it for six months to a year. Fake it til you make it then start dominating again.

I have a good friend who has it. He's VP of sales for a Fortune 100 company. He's gone from salesman to manager, to regional manager, to regional VP. Now hes VP over the entire country. Last year they named him executive of the year. His stock options are worth enough to where he's going to retire in 7 years at 56 years old.

But he claims that at every annual review he's convinced that he's about to be fired. When he gets up to give a presentation he thinks everyone is laughing at him because he doesn't know what he's talking about.

It's a weird combination of fascinating and sad to listen to him try to explain it.

He's fully aware of the syndrome and aware that it's an emotional disorder. He just doesn't know what to do about it.

I deal with imposter syndrome daily, but what you’re dealing with sounds like it may be a bit deeper than doubting your belonging.

My favorite method of dealing with it is reminding myself that if (fill in the blank’s name of someone who is a complete moron) can do it, then I am more than enough.

I’ve also leaned into it a bit and turned it into a motivator. “Do I have what it takes?” Go fricking find out, baw.

Are you afraid of failing? You're already failing by not trying. Let that sink in.

I definitely feel it in my office. I think, based on feedback alone, that I'm a top performer, but given that I am younger than my colleagues, I often feel inadequate and like i'm out of my league being there.

Yes, being the sole breadwinner definitely has an impact. But you are correct. Life changing money on the table and I'm too chicken shite to take it.

Just strange to me, other people think I can do it and want me there, but I don't. Maybe I need my Test levels checked.

So, do you feel like a fraud even while high performing and that's holding you back? Or is the root really that you're afraid to underperform once you're in the higher grade position?

But at least he's actually taking the positions. Kudos to him.
