Imagine you were stuck in contraflow when the hurricane hit. Then imagine this.

This is from the wildfire in Canada.

Winds changed and the fire grew very rapidly.

There's only one road.

Been through Katrina.
Never a wildfire on that order of magnitude.

I can see how the ptsd from the wildfire might be worse.

No offense to those fleeing Katrine (I was one of them) but if you were stranded on the interstate in your car, that'd be relatively safe...depending on wind direction.

This is a whole new level of nightmare. The fire will consume you and you are in your car and can't go anywhere.

But both hurricanes and fire evacuation are very similar. You know it is coming and you can get out. You pray for the best. The bad thing about this is they underestimated it and then the wind kicked up.

An unusually intense May wildfire roared into Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, on Tuesday, forcing the largest wildfire evacuation in province history. The flames rode the back of hot, windy weather that will continue through Wednesday and could pick up again this weekend.

The wildfire is the latest in a lengthening lineage of early wildfires in the northern reaches of the globe that are indicative of a changing climate. As the planet continues to warm, these types of fires will likely only become more common and intense as spring snowpack disappears and temperatures warm.

“This (fire) is consistent with what we expect from human-caused climate change affecting our fire regime,” Mike Flannigan, a wildfire researcher at the University of Alberta, said.

Guess they better get more efficient at fighting fires then, because the third world and the powerhouses of Asia aren't stopping anytime soon.

It is human nature to wait until the last minute to leave.
