If you're going to interview with a small to mid-sized company out of state...

How often would you expect them to pay for travel expenses for your interview?

I know that if you're interviewing with a major company (Lowe's, Capital One, Target, etc.) they'll fly you out, put you up in a hotel, sometimes pay for your meals...but what about a tech startup or local healthcare organization?

I'm asking because I'm starting to send out a good number of applications now that graduation is approaching, and I'd like to know what to expect.

If you are going for a job interview, why would expect anything.

If you want the job, you are the one putting forth the effort, not them

For engineering, the norm was they would pay for travel expenses.

It is customary for middle-sized companies to pay for interview travel expenses every other time.

Tell the first company that you already went to another company first and it is their turn to pay your expenses.

tl/dr: I hope you interview more clearly than you compose questions here.

If it is out of state and they want you for in person interview they pay. Smaller companies may call you but take it from me, relocation is tough without some sort of assistance.

I would think they would pay your expenses. I work for a non profit, and when we fly someone in to interview, we pay their expenses.

Depends on company and position. I once applied with Verizon and made it fairly far in interview process. Flew out of state and obtained a rental car. Never was reimbursed.

I would expect any company that is inviting me for an onsite interview that take hours of driving or flying to get to to foot the bill. Do I want the job? Maybe. But I'm not going to fork over hundreds of dollars for you to interview me.

If the company doesn't reimburse you then look to deduct your travel expenses on your taxes. LINK

Every time I've interviewed out of state the company I was interviewing with covered my travel.

Very unprofessional for a company not to reimburse all travel, food and rental car expense.

Also depends if they are conducting a national search or if you are looking to move to the area.

I would 100% expect them to cover all costs.

Yellowfin nailed it. However I would think most companies hiring a kid right out of school would reimburse.

None of my friends who graduated with me and traveled for out of town engineering positions paid a dime.

Hmm, I always thought it was the norm to have it paid for

Yeah I'd be pretty irritated if they didn't pay for my ticket.

He is graduating so he doesn't qualify for that, and even if he did, he'd have to itemize.

The company should reimburse you. I've never traveled a long distance (I.e. Air-travel) for an interview that the company didn't pay for.

If they invite you for an interview, they should probably suggest a phone interview to start with and then decide if they want to fly you in.
