Saw this 90 sec segment as part of a stand up routine, and it made me think.

Memorize a geological survey of the California gold rush, Texas oil fields, etc. Go back in time and become history's greatest prospector/wildcatter. You wouldn't even have to do any work yourself. People would beat a path to your door and give you vast sums to point at a map and say, "look here."

frick yeah, id avoid a lot of bitches + shitheads and be a lot more successful when younger..and if all else failed I know I could bet it all on the Saints in 2009.

1. Memorize a map of all the richest oil beds in the country.
2. Memorize the blueprint for an oil derrick.
3. Go back to the 1880s or 90s.
4. Start an oil business with my partner, H.W.
5. Drill in oil rich areas before anyone else.

I think you guys may not be thinking about an entirely. Like microwave ovens, The technology was discovered in 1945 when they found a melted chocolate bar around their radio wave thingamajigy.... It still took close to 30 years before it actually materialized into anything monetarily speaking.
You could know where the oil is on a map...... But knowing the exact spot, how deep to drill,etc..... AND how would you convince somebody with the ability to drill that you magically know?
You aren't sent back in time with capital to make these things into fruition.

It wouldn't be necessary or advisable to "create" a whole new technology. You want to time it so you're there on the ground floor of an existing technology that's starting to boom. In the late 19th century they were already drilling several hundred feet using the same methods used for drilling water wells. You show up knowing exactly where to look. I mean, who would guess oil would be in Saudi Arabia of all places? Then you introduce clever innovations like rotating drill bits, how to case a well, etc. You would be the emperor of the world in short order.

Assuming no prep time, my only ability would be to try and find the people who invented things and bet on them in the stock market or try and work for future influential people. But if you are talking about going back into the early 1900s, I'm not certain if make a whole helluva lot of difference. I just don't have that much knowledge of important people during that time period.

I subscribe to the 12 Monkeys vs. the Back to the Future view of time travel. There's only one timeline and if you did travel back in time and someone had written a historical narrative on it, you'd have been written into history before you travelled back in time.

I forget the name but there is an old Twilight Zone episode that deals with this somewhat.

I think Lost explains it best with the phrase "whatever happened, happened". It's a more interesting approach to time traveling.

I agree. It takes a lot more thought to plan out the story. I also think it's funny that in the Back to the Future version of time travel, one huge event only makes minor changes to reality.
