Boom! Dead on. Problematically, if you put an end to that you lose 75% of the OT's posts.

In order to manage risk, we must first understand risk.

To a point. We as a society have deemed that it is beneath us to literally let people starve to death, so there will almost always be a safety net of some sort available.

and what's the industry standard for acceptability?

Obviously it is up to your personal discretion, but in the case of penny stocks you can also make a ton of money quickly, hence the risk/return model with which they're priced.

As for other situations, much of it has to do with the amount of involvement the victim has IMO. If you're murdered after walking down a street, you have my sympathy. If you're actively trying to make a family work with someone in the demographic you mentioned, and it fails, then you have my sympathy.

If you're speeding on the interstate and get in an accident that takes your life, you still have my sympathy, but if you're speeding and get a massive ticket, I don't care.

It depends on the outcome of the decision IMO, and a decent human being should know whether to be sympathetic or not.

You are correct. We need to be responsible for our decisions and not blame a bad choice on someone else or some event. All bad choices don't have bad outcomes, but the percentage of bad outcomes is much greater with bad choices.

Every step in life is about risk and choices. Poor choices, as a general rule, make life harder. And sometimes it only takes one bad choice to really mess up your life.

If you choose to invest all your money in high-tech penny stocks over DOW components, don't you deserve to lose everything? If you buy a $20k 2008 BMW over a $20k 2016 Toyota as your only means of transportation, don't you deserve to be broken down on the side of the highway with a maintenance bill of $2,500?
No, why would you deserve that?

However your stock and car investment turn out, that's what you deserve.

"Deserve" is a strong word. Just because you risk something, you don't automatically "deserve" negative consequences. You just have to understand and accept what it is you are risking and the odds of your risk not paying off. A better statement would be "If you choose to expose yourself to risk, you should understand the consequence."

This is what I mean.

Hwy 30, single lane traffic backed up due to all the plant workers getting off. Some Vanilla ice Beiber flat bill with a hot girl in the front seat comes barreling down the turn lane for better than 1/4 mile. He's passing up at least 30 vehicles, even jumping into oncoming traffic to pass up islands in the turn lane(middle Lane).

anyone who saw this would think the dude deserves a ticket....but moreso an enormous arse beating. Does the hot girl not also deserve a beating for positively reinforcing this jackass? If dude beats up on her...does she not deserve it? I mean really the best case scenario is for the dude to beat the ever-living s*** out of her enough where he has to go to jail and she learns a lesson not to associate herself with that type of guy. Then in jail the dude would get raped and beat for being a woman batterer.

Isn't that the optimal outcome?
