i may look at investing in some ETH, though. like a grand or so

any money invested in ETH right now is still VERY EARLY money at any price.

most people still haven't heard of it and the technology itself is still in it's infancy - just look at this thread.

the question is whether the big banks will attempt to standardize around ETH or go their own way - that remains to be seen

Well, if you believe the OP, it's worth $14.58M

Not true.

That would be 6 years and we don't know what kind of growth happened from year 1-2 (well, I don't)

Maybe that first year in the OP story was huge.

What do these bitcoins look like? What are they made of and how do they compare in size to a quarter?

Hanyecz believed that the coins he had "mined" on his computer were worth around 0.003 cents each
Does anybody with a stronger bitcoin background want to chime in on this? I don't know a ton about their beginning, but I have a difficult time believing that a bitcoin was ever worth only 0.003 cents. It sounds like Hanyecz paid a price far too high to satisfy his munchies, not that anyone could have purchased 73 million dollars worth of bitcoin for 100 bucks.

...and I think it will be a damn good investment regardless, simply based on ETH's support for smart contracts and such. That's what's getting the big boys interested.

Um, it's difficult to accept because techies can't translate why it's safe.

it's not 100% safe. there is risk involved

But, it's going to take a lot of work to convince the majority of people that the digitized money world can be trusted when big banks aren't involved.

and that's where the advantage comes in

i'm no saying people who don't rely on BTC are stupid or anything, it's about seeing things outside of the traditional paradigm. now is the paradigm guaranteed to succeed? no, of course not. that's why you need some acceptance of risk.

i don't like the price fluctuations of BTC to be perfectly honest. i want more stable growth/decline so it can be used as a legitimate currency. there are supreme advantages to having a portable outlet that allows you to access whatever you can afford to store in that outlet, especially if you leave the US (even if it's a hasty retreat)

Yes I have a 2600K build sitting in a cardboard box that I could use to build a mining rig.

Is ethereum mining the same process as bitcoin?

i try to explain it to my friends like casino chips. i can't go buy something at a store with a poker chip, but if i have a $500 chip, would i sell it to someone for anything less than $500? no. can the casino who owns the chip go bankrupt? sure.

Bad example. Can the casino say that chip is now worth $50?

So how do you " " my statement:

All the people that are flocking to it now are only looking for a quick buck.

...when you are doing exactly that. As I stated in that post, Wiki never argued for bitcoin as an investment. He backed up everything he said with technology, blockchains, frick the government, and laws of the universe type of stuff. There is a 20+ page on the money board with a bunch of people looking to make a quick buck. If you truly believed in bitcoin you would hold, regardless of value.

If you're running this out of your own home, it's not going to be worth it. The amount you'll spend on power will exceed the amount of crytpocurrency you generate.
