I was at the Confederate Flag lowering, and this is what I saw. (with Pics!)

Gif is not mine:
The entire crowd was level headed and lots of fruitful discussions were being had between flag supporters and take down supporters. I stood next to some transplant SC residents from New York and Michigan that held pretty ignorant opinions of that flag and the state of SC (they said that they urged their children to leave the state...wouldn't you want your children to stay and try to make the state better instead of running away?). I'm good with taking it down but they were saying some pretty stupid things about people who claim heritage and all. They just didn't care or want to understand where the other side is coming from. But, they were nice people in the end.
The ceremony was nice. Quick and to the point, the way it needed to be done.
There was an army of law enforcement out there. I've never seen that many officers before. They had a team at every statue on the grounds as well (especially at the Strom Thurmond statue).
Jesse Jackson was in front of me. Gross.
Abortion/gay marriage protesters were there which is funny.
Some guy was doing a pretty good job singing Bob Marley.
The highlight was watching the Omega Phi Psi Fraternity. Those guys are great.
Also, SC must have one of the best looking State Houses and grounds in the entire country.
Hopefully with dwindling news coverage on this issue, all the side debates about taking down monuments and all will go away.

Did they burn the flag after they took it down? Would have made great theater.

Sounds uneventful.
Should have thrown rolled boogers in Jackson's hair.

The monument is still up, right?
That's got to get dug out and moved next.

Can't wait to print this out, laminate it, and read it to my grand kids one day.

I am completely shocked by this.

So now that it's down, is everything right in the world?

How does it feel now that racism is over in South Carolina?
Any kumbayah singing yet? Unicorns and rainbows abound?

This week's Race Passion Play. It serves it's purpose. Keeps people thinking they have solved something, gives them a symbol to hate, with the added benefit of allowing everybody to ignore the existential issues that are actually destroying lives. I'll make sure to watch The Kardashians Twitter feed to see how they respond to this.

Whitey don't stay. Whitey runs and then logs onto message boards and bitches about the places he left, like his opinion still counts.
quote:I used to be on the other side, and I don't really care for it, either. I don't really care to take seriously any opinion that involves us flying the flag of our mid-20th century southern segregationist heritage on state grounds. Segregationists got to fly their flag for 54 years. Way to go, SC.
They just didn't care or want to understand where the other side is coming from.

I seriously doubt that will happen.
If you try really hard at something and succeed, why stop? There are still thousands of Confederate memorials across the south that "are offensive". This will only embolden the movement to purge all symbols of the confederacy from the south. I predict they start going after state owned museums next.
