$100

If register started with $1000.00 and $100 was stolen that leaves $900. Total sales for the day were $70 leaving a total of $970 in the register when it should be $1070. The $70 transaction will balance out because payment was received even though it was stolen.

Let's assume the register had $500 in it at the time of theft, and that between the time of theft and the customer checking out there were no other transactions. After the theft the register had $400, but would show to have $500 (-$100). The lady then checks out and pays for $70 in groceries. After her transaction the register would show to have $570, but due to the theft only has $470 (-$100). So in the end the owner lost $100 in food, profit, and owed tax revenue off the register.

Okay, I have $100 in my pocket. someone steals that $100 from me. I now have $0. Then they turn around and buy a widget from me for $50. I paid $30 for the widget. I now have $50 in my pocket - $30 I paid for the widget. So I'm down to $20...which is not $0.

Edit: I understand that I should have $150 in my pocket (original $100 + $50 for the widget). But if the thief never bought the widget from me, I'd have $0, but instead I have $20.

okay now the guy that took the $100 from you runs away and someone else buys the widget from you for $50...shouldn't you have $150 now?

The guy had $100 taken from his register. Short of it being returned to him for nothing, he lost $100. It doesn't matter what the thief does otherwise.

But, if the payment was received in the form of something other than the stolen $100; which the store owner had, along with the goods at the start of the day, then does it really balance out?????
