Sorry to do this.

My dad had surgery today. He'd been sick the last two weeks and we were sure it was related to his lungs because of his exposure to Agent Orange back in Vietnam. He's already had half of one lung removed.

So this morning he's in the hospital and they suddenly announce he needs emergency gall bladder surgery.

Which had turned gangrenous. They just missed that somehow the last two fricking weeks he was in the hospital.

The surgery went fine, he's doing great and they are talking about letting him go home tomorrow... but how the fricking frick do you not catch a gall bladder that is doing so poorly it developed gangrene even though you have been in the hospital for the last two weeks?

I don't trust myself to meet his doctors tomorrow I'm so mad. How do you miss that? For two weeks?

Supposedly modern medicine is so great. Yet stories like this seem to become more and more common. Sorry to ear about your struggles. Prayers sent.

This type of thing is very common. If you have anyone hospitalized, you pretty much have to live with them to keep them well is the general way I've always seen things.

With that being said, don't be that angry dude in the hospital. its just not the way to go about things. Symptoms can be unpredictable and unless you are a doctor, it's really hard to say how obvious it was.

I wish you the best. I had to deal with my dad twice with endocarditis and once with my grandmother being hospitalized for 3 years on and off again. Keep your head up!

You live in arky. This is what happens when your doctors use venomous snakes and prayer to practice medicine.

You think that's bad? My dad had his chest cut open top to bottom for surgery after a major aortic dissection and apparently the nurses weren't monitoring the suture/wire keeping his chest together closely enough during the ensuing weeks, so it literally burst open while my mom and sister were in the room with him. My dad says he remembers looking down into his open chest. Amazing he's still alive after all that 5 yrs later.

that is a whole lot more common than you think. i work in a hospital and these situations occurred weekly. if they suspected lung problems there is no need to check gall bladder out. they can't do a full body review everytime someone comes in. that's not cost effective at all.

trust me, don't act an arse in the hospital. all the employees stick together regardless of fault and it will only result in worse care for your dad. seen that one a million times too. nurses, for the most part, are jaded lazy fricks who do the absolute minimal possible for their patients.

More than likely due to second hand smoke than "agent orange". Agent Orange is a herbicide. Not likely it caused problems to your dad from 40 year ago exposure. That is more a political problem than a medical one.

I've heard of some second hand smoke stories that sound like this, cancer usually follows.

Gallbladders don't present readily until things are bad.
This does not surprise me.
Gallbladder surgery is usually emergency surgery.

Honestly dude, of course that sucks. But thankfully they got the gallbladder out and he can go home tomorrow

Just thank God (if that's your thing). It could've gone a lot worse. And you can't sue the Dr's and I promise nothing you say will make them feel anything. Mistakes are made. Things are missed. No one is perfect. Even drs unfortunately. They may say something to appease you, but that's the best case scenario. I say let it go and be grateful

Are we even sure mistakes were made? Obviously the Drs. felt your dad was sick enough to keep him in the hospital for 2 weeks.
