I'm using this online hip/valley calculator to determine backing angles and dihedral angles, and one of the descriptions is tripping me up.

Calculator

i'm converting it to excel and i'm not understanding how the answer is getting calculated. i thought cosine was between -1 and 1?

what is: cos 1x 38.659 = 1.28

how is that wrote out to make sense? cos(38.65) = 0.57

Sorry. I went to law school because they said, “no math”.

But I’ll guess the mandatory “350”.

Good luck !

Looks like it should say 1/cos(38.65) instead.

Excel uses radians by default. Convert the angle to radians and then use cos. You also can click help on this function for cosine and excel will splain.

I am impressed with the wizardry of the math experts on this board.

I thought the only thing that the O-T knew about were boobs. I’m shaking my head at myself.

Does mathway not exist anymore? I use to look up almost every problem, and re work it with the actual numbers from my problem.

I took four years of calculus in college, whenever I need rafters laid out or intricate gable angles cut I do what any self-respecting engineering major would do.....

You fly guys know all that stuff - Bernoulli’s Equation and such.

I took trig in HS and somehow, by the Grace of God, passed the NYS Regent’s Exam. I had to take 12 credits of math in college as part of the core curriculum. Kept me off the Dean’s List for 2 semesters.

I could have been Bluto, lying on the floor lamenting, “Seven years of college down the drain - I should have joined the frickin’ Peace Corps.”

Looking at the numbers in the OP made my head hurt.

i'm just a peeon draftsman. i've been spoiled by simply drawing/modeling these conditions to verify angles, lengths, etc., but i'm currently in a role where i have to provide "tools" for the main users/draftsman to make their lives easier and more efficient.
