They paid $10 per for wine when it should have been $8.33 per ($25 / 3).

They should have each gotten back $1.67

The dollar never disappears

Each person paid 9.33 including the dollar. Waitress has 2.

Correct.

plus the waitress kept $2 for her tip. That leaves $29.

Incorrect. Why are you adding 2 dollars? The tip amount was already included in the 27.

No one knows the answer to your question. It has currently been sent to CERN for further study. Will keep you posted.

but the waitress wouldnt split it up like that.

she brought back 5 dollars left over from the 25 dollar bottle of wine.

she didnt divide it evenly so somewhere the dollar is coming up missing, correct?

are you accounting for the difference of once they each get a dollar back?

she takes 30 to the restaurant
they give her 5 back.
she takes two and gives the remaining 3 back to the people. the initial price of the wine is irrelevant

Look at it step by step:
$30/3= $10 per person
$25 bottle => $5 back
$3 back => $1 to each person
Now subtract the $1 from amount paid by each person 10-1=9
Waitress still has $25 for bottle plus $2 for tip. Therefore everyone paid $9 bc $27/3=9 per person
Basically what confuses everyone is saying PLUS the tip, where it should say $27 paid INCLUDING the tip

ETA: these guys are terrible tippers

Before
$30 - bottle price (10.00 per person)

After
$25 - bottle price (8.33 per person)
$3 - refund (1.00 per person)
$2 - tip (0.67 per person)
= $30 dollars

You are doing two things incorrectly:
1. math
2. not realizing there is no tip in the before scenario

No, They paid $25/3 people = $8.33 per person. When they get the dollar back they paid $9.33.

It's not that hard.

I totally understand that logic - but have tested it out multiple times and there is no difference in outcome.

If I told you, you could choose one door or two doors, which would you prefer?

I think that picture explains it perfectly.

How have you tested it?

Have you just selected one door, then removed one from the equation at random? Or did you know which door contained the car, and removed the other one.

Knowing what is behind each door makes all the difference in the world. That's what people fail to grasp. Also the process that Monty uses.
