Husband of Laura Frickey files lawsuit against parents of the teens accused in her death

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Following the conviction of John Honore, the last teenager implicated in the Mid-City carjacking and murder of Linda Frickey, her husband Rickey Frickey is advancing a lawsuit against the parents of the involved youths.

Honore, 18, was found guilty of second-degree murder. His co-defendants, Briniyah Baker, 17, Lenyra Theophile, 16, and Mar’Qel Curtis, 16, had earlier pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter.

The lawsuit, filed on March 21 in Orleans Parish Civil District Court, seeks over $50,000 for wrongful death, loss of income, and emotional suffering. The lawsuit was put on ice until the end of the case, according to the attorney for Rickey Frickey, Donald Hodges Jr.

“In this instance, it’s about proving that parents will be held responsible and liable for acts such as this,” Hodges said.

FOX 8 Legal Analyst Joe Raspanti believes if a jury does award a judgment, the challenge is collecting payment.

“Civil lawsuits are about money, just about money,” Raspanti said. “It’s not about the principal about the thing, it’s not about anything else other than we want to collect money damages. If you can get a judgment, but not collect money, than it is basically a pyrrhic victory.”

Frickey’s attorney is discussing with his attorney the possibility of expanding his lawsuit.

Hodge said, “We are considering options that could possibly include the City of New Orleans, the Office of Juvenile Justice, the State of Louisiana and various actors that we believe that the people involved here have had an ongoing problem that contributed to this culture that lead to the death and murder of Mrs. Frickey.”

Raspanti said, “This is an uphill climb because they have to get liability against the parents or these other entities which will to a varying degree be difficult to do. Once you do that, the collection of those judgments will be an even larger mountain to climb. This is an uphill battle.”
