I don't really remember Ike or anything about it. But I think it's because I was without power after gustav for almost two weeks and was kinda out of touch with what it was doing

I think I read that it is currently the 3rd costliest hurricane in US history, behind Katrina and Sandy. I remember visiting Galveston a few years later, and the island was still noticeably recovering.

Houston was a nightmare after Ike. Being in the heavily wooded suburbs, there were an insane number of houses that had large trees fall on them. We didn't think it would be that bad, then overnight - BAM! I remember standing in line for 3hrs for ice at the local HEB Houston was underprepared

Whoever designed and built that house is a badass.

We had just moved to The Woodlands. I figured that we were so far north that there shouldn't be much to worry about. With so many big trees near our house and the worst hitting in the early morning hours, we slept in our walk-in closet with the kids and animals. As we walked around our street the following morning, we realized that we were fortunate with random houses having big trees fall on them.
We didn't have a land line and calls weren't going through on our cell phones. Lost power for a few days. My dad was worried about us and drove from S. La. with multiple containers filled with gas and a generator. We ended up deciding to leave town to stay with family in La. until power came back on and gave our new neighbor the generator.
Watched the short film in Galveston of the 1900 hurricane recently and enjoyed it.

Since 95% of this board seems to live in either Louisiana or Texas, I figured most would know or could figure out from the pictures (especially the one on the interstate that says "Galveston") that Ike hit in Galveston.
However, the OP is edited.

I was in my last semester at UTMB in Galveston. Ha an apartment right off Seawall Blvd first floor. Came back into town on that Sunday before it hit. Left early Wednesday morning when the hurricane changed course and took a direct line to Galveston. Lost everything except what I could pack in my car. When we were finally let back on the island, i couldn't even recognize the place. If I didn't live there for 3 years no way I would have been able to even get to my apartment. Slept on random peoples couches for weeks. It was miserable.

Wow, 8 years already. I took a year off from school at LSU and worked in Port Arthur, TX during that time. I was living with family just across the LA border, so I drove through Orange, and Bridge City every day. It was weird as hell because my grandparents and family in Vinton were totally fine, and you wouldnt even know a Hurricane hit the region. Then one could head 15-20 miles west and it looked like a bomb went off in Bridge City. Most of Port Arthur itself fared well too, but everything else in that area was bad. My parents live north of Houston and they were without power for a week or two, and they had many neighbors with trees and limbs going through their roofs.

Remember that storm well.
We had evacuated to Alexandria for Gustav. At the time it was supoosed to hit around Cameron or further east, so Lake Charles was going to take a hit. Then the damn thing turned and we ended up in the middle of it in Alexandria.
So when Ike was coming, I remember my parents asking us if we wanted to evacuate and potentially end up in it anyway, or ride that fricker out.
We said frick it, let's ride the bastard out. That was pretty freaky the night it made landfall. We had the whole house boarded up, so we could only hear the wind and the rain hitting the house. We had no idea what we wake up to the next morning.
Next morning rolls around. It was calm, so we went outside. A lot of limbs and leaves down, but nothing major. Thought, "eh, no big deal."
Then the warer started backing up from the canal south of our neighborhood. That made us a bit uneasy for a while. Backed up probably a quarter of a mile and was up the base of our door before it started receeding. Thankfully, no water in the house.
First time I ever saw an amphiuma (or freshwater eel as a lot of folks down here call them). Thought those bastards were cool as shite. That lasted until I froze one for a college class.
Nasty frickers!!

I was in high school the year Ike made landfall. People in my hometown cringe when Ike is mentioned. So many people returned to a concrete slab where their home use to be.

I remember that night. Spent the night at my parents' house where I woke up to a pine tree hitting the roof. Drove back to my house in the morning and couldn't get past the gate because of the trees down. Nothing to do but yard work and bourbon drinking for a couple days.
