We don't know what it looks like. We don't know how far it will go on a charge. We don't even know exactly how much it will cost.

But for all we don't know about the new Tesla Model 3, thousands of Tesla fans know they want it anyway, and are willing to plunk down real money for a car that won't be unveiled until tonight.

Tesla dealerships around the world are taking $1,000 deposits for the car from customers, sight unseen — it's even more impressive considering Tesla isn't expected to begin deliveries of the car until late next year.

Are they waiting in line to see it or put down a deposit?

I'm excited for the reveal tonight. Model year 2018 or 2019 is about the time my current car should be retired, and depending on design and specs, the Model 3 could be a leading candidate for it's replacement.

Helps that LA Tesla buyers get between $14,400 and $17,000 in tax rebates after purchasing.

The kind of people in Tesla lines aren't like those in Apple lines I'm sure

You have a strange definition of huge.

Looks like the waiting line for a Hillary convention. Look to a Trump rally if you want to see huge lines.

I'm considering one. Tesla has made some damn good cars so far, but I am not ordering anything sight unseen.

Certainly wouldn't either. But the 1K deposit is refundable until your car ships at least.

I'm sure there are quite a few being paid to do this by Tesla shareholders along with the shareholders themselves. They can always get the $1000 deposit back in full.

Deposits are probably transferable, a lot of these people are most likely putting up the deposit to resell them.

With $40/barrel oil buying an electric car is silly. These guys are buying them thinking they're going to make top dollar on a resale. Little do they know that where you order it matters not. You could have been first to order in new york city today and someone in LA gets it first, tesla said theyll begin filling orders in the west coast first. Either way, overrated car and company.

The real question is will Elon be an hour late, like he was at the power wall event
