If you watch the videos, calling this a riot is a stretch. And if you watch interviews there’s an explanation that one woman was banging on the glass door when it broke. Attendence was first come first serve. Didn’t look like there was much else and people didn’t push the broken glass down and run in. At least my take after reading the article and watching a few videos.

I’d suggest the football stadium but that wouldn’t be air conditioned.

Well, it’s a simple matter of mathematics. Let’s say the facility holding the graduation holds 1,500* people. That means if you have a graduating class of 375 and each has four guests attend, you will fill your facility to capacity. And according to this story, Howard graduated 2,800 in this class.

*Howard’s Crampton Auditorium has seating for 1,500 people according to Google.

Reminds me of that Bernie Mac bit at the Grammies years ago, when he said “Rappers, ya’ll don’ need no 59 people on stage if you win. Show them the damn trophy in the limo”.

ow do y'all know it was family members? How do the university officials know the make-up of the unruly crowd? How do they know they were "Late for graduation"?

Do you think they didn’t tell them, LOUDLY, that they are family members? If you lock the doors when the event starts and people come up after that, they are late. This isn’t rocket science.

I read an article that I’ll try to find again but I think there was under 300 nursing graduates.

ETA: Howard article

280 nursing graduates according to this article, which makes more sense for the size of the venue. Who knows who is correct given the state of “journalism” today.

Thanks for the more legitimate article.

280 nursing school graduates is a lot!

This is also from your article:
quote:

Howard University chief communications officer Lydia Sermons said “running out of space for graduations of individual colleges had not been an issue in past years”. She said this year’s graduating class is “the largest in Howard University history,” combined with many students not having a normal high school graduation in 2020 due to the pandemic has drawn huge crowds for graduations this year.
