Maybe get an overlay mattress to cover the one on the futon. Then you'd have to remove it every day if you plan to turn it back in to seating. We had a futon and it was not at all comfortable.

Memory foam mattress pad. They usually have them at Wal-mart or Bed Bath and Beyond for $150-$200.

Hey everyone. I think I am going to be sleeping on a futon for the long-term, and was wondering what I could do to make it more comfortable to sleep on? Does anyone have any tips?

Put a memory foam topper on it. More expensive, but you can get a higher quality futon mattress. I slept on one for a few weeks after having foot surgery years ago. I got the best mattress I could and put on the topper...it slept great.

You're going to want to go to Bed, Bath & Beyond for starters... Pick up some 800+ thread count sheets. I know some people prefer Jersey sheets, but a high thread count will do the trick... Next, find one of those "egg shell foam" pads that's big enough for your body to sleep comfortably on.

Next, and this is the most important part... When you get home, breakdown the futon into 4 easily moveable pieces and then haul that shite to the curb and sleep on the floor with the foam pad.

You're welcome.
