How to help a depressed friend

My buddy, while he may not admit it, is clearly depressed and he has just become insufferable to be around. Everything he says is negative and nothing ever seems to be good enough for him. He has become moody and selfish at times as well, which isn't normally like him. So my question for the OT is how should we as his friends help him through whatever it is, or should we simply let him work through it alone? Thanks in advance.

Bring him to Mexico. Mexican hookers and blow have been known to bring people back from the brink.

Sprinkle amphetamines in his food/drinks.

If the situation is serious I don't know why you'd come here with this.

While that may be a good plan, I don't see him going for that

Be patient and listen. Don't give up on him, even when he's hard to be around. This didn't happen overnight, and it won't resolve overnight. Encourage him to seek help, especially if he starts talking about self harm.

Is he suicidal? If he buys a gun, I'd be concerned.

Show him some of Sampson's posts.
He'll realize his life isn't all that bad.

Cut off all communication with him. You're endangering your own life being around him

You should first start by asking to sit down and talk with him. Let him know that you care and want to help. If he tells you no, keep asking. Tell him that you've noticed a change in his mood, and you just want to be there for him.

Im in the same boat with a buddy. Just got out of a 4 year relationship with a super bitch. He didnt want to go do anything. What I did was drag is arse out of bed or the couch and make him go workout. He used to be a big gym rat. I didnt force him to go out or anything. Just to get out of his home for a bit at a time. Hes going to counseling now, and has admitted he has been in a fog. After 4 months of this, I think hes making good strides. All you can do is try to get his mind off things.

What yoyre describing isn't necessarily what most would define as depression. He may be under a lot of stress which is leading to his negative attitude. Depression signs would be him pulling away from friends, secluding and withdrawing himself from activities he normally participates in. Has he been doing any of that

Get him a dog, seriously.

What is he depressed about?

We have tried sitting him down and talking to him, but he's too stubborn, he doesn't really want to hear it.

He's in the Tibbothy Zone.
Buy him beer and find him a good gout study.
