PMP- Project Management professional

Does it make it easier to transition to a new role at a larger company? What type of advantages does the PMP give you in your daily routine?

EDIT: Is there any good online programs for it. I am looking for those right now

Snoop Dogg wouldn't be the man he is today without that certification.

Try Google:

The PMP can also provide a significant advantage when it comes to salary and earning potential. Among survey respondents to PMI’s Earning Power Salary Survey, those with a PMP certification garner a higher salary (20% higher on average) than those without a PMP certification.*

I honestly read that as PIMP certification.

Why are you assuming it's engineering or construction.

I think it depends on what sector you're in. I don't know anyone with that here, and it hasn't held anyone back from becoming project directors or executive leadership.

I'm a project manager, and none of the other project managers I work with have one. That said, I plan to get it.

Some organizations really value it, but I don't think it is nearly as valuable as a track record of successful project management. It will open some doors if your experience is a little light.

I took a project management class at LSU and the prof talked up the PMP a good bit, but not to a point where it was essential to have.

If you have little experience then look into the CAPM. It's like the junior pmp.

I don't find that it is very valuable for Project Mangers in the Consulting Engineering world. As long as someone has a PE, they're fine.

An ex worked at Ochsner, and most of their "Project Managers" had a PMP.

All depends on the area of work.

I'm just trying to figure out how to get into a project mgmt position. I'd love to add the PMP or CAPM to my MBA but both certs require experience.

It's important if you're going to work in an IT PMO. Some managers get hung up on PMI and make it required for project management jobs irregardless of industry.

All it really proves is you can memorize all kinds of bullshite.

As is the case with most non-degree certifications, it used to be valuable until it got too saturated and management realized that is was pretty much worthless and too generic.
