How do social media, software, gaming companies, etc, comply with laws all over the world?

Just reading a story about a spat between Elon Musk and Brazil over X.

Seems impossible to obey laws in the nearly 200 countries, many of them conflicting.

It’s one thing if you are physically located there, obviously you have to follow their laws. But these companies are mostly just on the web or apps.

Not sure how they manage it, especially with free speech laws having so many interpretations.

We are friends with a couple whose business does all the paperwork/testing to ensure compliance with country's electrical and electronics laws. I think they handle about 80 different countries. Some things need different testing to adding certain things or taking away certain things and the company balances whether it is profitable for specific countries.

I assume they have these types of consultants for all types of businesses that export to multiple countries.

They get to call their bribes “donations”.

You hire consultants to tell your legal dept. what they shouldn't do. But we won't give legal advice, so...

There is a reason the consistent rule of law is one of the most consistent success factors internationally.

They base it on geolocation I would assume. Depending on where you are in the world, you get different levels of censorship.

They typically have a large GRC department and are audited by third parties against various frameworks and regulations on at least an annual basis.

I honestly don't understand why a company like X wouldn't say - "OK, frick off, we are just going to block your entire country from our platform" and be done with it

Brazil is not spend much on ads on X so it wouldn't really matter

Elon should tell them and their entire country to frick off

We had lawyers who worked on different areas of the world so they became familiar. Also employed local outside counsel to ensure we were aligned with their laws.

Local counsel is definitely the way to go.

Hire local counsel/consultants, program towards the most reasonable lowest common denominator, then IP based geofence the extreme outliers.

Have a budget for bribes and/or legal fees when there are dust ups.
