Long story short, I asked someone I was talking with "how do they punish kids these days at school", which was relevant to the conversation.. Anyway, he told me that the school his kids go to, they have to go to the "Dean's office" and there are pictures they have to point to, to express how they are feeling in order to try to figure out what could be the reason behind their actions.

Is this really a thing? I didn't believe him at first, I was waiting for him to say "im joking, I made that up.. but seriously they ______________" but he said seriously, that's what happens at the school his kid goes to. WTF is that?

Behavior consequences might be lacking in a lot of schools, but I've never heard of anything like that.

The most they can do is:
send them home
make them stay late in detention
expel them
bar them from participating in after school activities

The bad kids DGAF about any of these punishments, so there really isn't any incentive to curb the behavior. There is no fear of consequences.

Sounds uh progressive I guess. Probably works as good as any place I have been. Break, lunch, after school detention. Call parents first then write ups. That can lead to iss or in school suspension or eventually suspended from school. The suspension just seems to give them what they want. Personally I do not write anyone up unless it is really bad. I'd rather make them suffer in my presence than get what they want and get away.

Me either, but like I said, it is supposedly to help identify the problem by explaining how they were feeling at the moment. Were they angry? If so, why were they angry and why did being angry cause them to act the way they did?

Take a good look around.

They don't punish kids these days; at best, they say 'you don't get to do bonus activity x'-- which is horseshite, as they're not being denied anything, just not being granted additional benefits.

I'm all about getting to the root of the problem. And there's undoubtedly kids out there who could learn from seeing how responsible adults handle conflict versus what they see at home.

But at this point, if you do something like knock the shite out of a teacher than you should be handed an eSchool login and told to visit your free public library if you want to finish your education.

By no means am I a professional when it comes to educating kids or kids in general, but there are consequences to our actions and it doesn't seem like this is something that kids learn in school.

Our school's mascot was the Rebels and we used to get spanked with a big wooden confederate flag paddle. You'd have stars and bars red marks and bruises on your arse for a day or so.

I actually didn't mind iss, you could always get your work done.

Now Saturday detention? Only did that once and it was enough. Couldn't do school work, couldn't sleep, just had to sit there.

In hs, we had half day every Wednesday. They would give kids dentention on those days.

My kids don't frick up that often but when they do, the school just calls me and gives then detention. Saturday detention for bigger frick ups. Suspension after that.

So in our district here in Houston my son had a couple of his buddies decide to sneak booze into a school function. They were caught and kicked out of the school and sent to the thug school ( Think it was Valley Park in Baton Rouge in the 80's.) in the district. Basically school for F-ups. Senior year and didn't get to graduate with there class.

I got caught my senior year at Broadmoor and was suspended for two days.

We can't, the laws and society won't allow us. So a few bad apples ruin the whole bushel. I am fortunate that the majority of my students take my Chem/Phys classes.

Sounds a lot like the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) programs they've implemented here in CA. It seems they spend more time on this stuff now than the subject matter.

My wife was unexpectedly clocked by a 12 year old boy at her school. No punishment at all really, but I'm sure he is SPED and behaviorally challenged and therefore "untouchable". We called the police but were told that due to his age and "his personal issues" there was little chance of any punishment.
