Men from that generation wouldn't try to fake something like that.

This. Plus if its a dude who looks old as dirt, I'm inclined to trust his word.

Chances are he has family with him as caretakers so grow some balls and go thank the guy and ask him.

Call him a pussy to his face. You'll find out real fast.

Knock his hat off his head and draw a line in the dirt with your foot. Then spit and dare him to cross over the line. How he responds will tell you all you need to know.

This definitely.

The fact that he is wearing evidence of his service on his head means he is proud of it, which means he probably won't have any problem talking about it.

Pay attention to any pins that he has on it and ask him about them as well. If you are polite and respectful he will likely talk at length about his experiences. Talking to him is a way of making him feel appreciated for his service, and it would also help you gain some insight into people.

Does seeing the real thing threaten whatever "valor" you feel when you wear a PT shirt bought at the Army Navy surplus?

Thank him for your freedom, because without fighting the koreans and the germans you wouldn't have any freedom.

Or something like that

My father is 91, served towards the end of WWII and again at beginning of Korea. Most folks that age who served are pretty much past the drawing attention to themselves stage in their life. If they are wearing those hats it is for themselves or as bond with those they served with. Especially Korea. Chances are, very few people in this country (present company excluded) under the age of 45 would even know there was a war in Korea. Hasn't been taught about in school (at least in California) for decades.
