Tomcat bait stations are shite. Step it up to one of these;

Then, fill it with this and the bird feed as often as needed;

Being next to a wooded area means they will always be around, but this will definitely knock down the number of them.

It does. Look online, various modifications but all with the basic setup and premise.

Very interesting. They can climb up a metal pole to the feeder (I've got a cone to keep them and squirrels from getting to the feeder though). Do you have to coat the inside of the container with something that they will slip on when trying to climb out?

be careful with it though, as it will kill birds and pets too...and it is not a nice way to go, at all.....

This times a million. I wouldn't frick with rat poison outdoors. Or indoors if you have pets or small children.

if you know an electrician and own a camera, this could end up being pretty fun

Pick up the bird feeder for a while. You're giving them an easy meal with the bird food.

Get a large glass or metal jar/container. Big enough to hold several gallons of water at ten inches or so deep while leaving another foot or more from the top. Like a large tall crawfish pot.

Dig a hole and place the top of the pot at ground level. Take and oil up a metal rod and secure across the center of the container leaving the middle section clean. Take peanut butter and heavily coat the middle section of the rod.

They will try to walk the rod to get to the peanut butter, slip and fall into container. The cannot climb out and will succumb to severe over hydration.

Does this really work? Could you put a bunch of snakes in the jar instead of water? Or maybe burning embers?

Going to try the homemade rat trap with a 5 gal bucket this week. Saw a lot of success stories online. I'll report back on its effectiveness.

I used a bucket with a ramp. Had a few decide that my shop would be a nice place to live.

Like I mentioned, several variations but it works. Didn't see the coke can when I looked into this years ago but Google this.

I periodically have issues with desert rats and Home Depot sells rat traps- which look like giant-sized mousetraps- get the ones for $1.97 in the attached pic. Buy a couple and bait them with a mixture of oatmeal and peanut butter, it will work like a charm.

You're putting out feed for them and you wonder why you have rats?

I'll second the pro level bait station. There is a reason you see those outside most commercial buildings and restaurants.

If they are eating the bait they will die a few days later.

I would eliminate the bird feed and make the bait the only source of food on the property.
