How did mowers become as expensive as a used car while becoming terrible?

Bought a nice mower several years ago and it got through about 5 mows before it screwed up on every one and had to go to the shop. I finally gave up on it and ate the expense. Just got by after that feeling burned.
I finally gave in again and bought an expensive, supposedly reliable mower in March and today it burned off the belts on the deck before I could get the blades stopped.
I'm not jumping them off ramps. Just a regular yard. Just mowing.
With expense should come quality. Mowers are shite.

Almost every household appliance and accessory has gone to shite. In the past you threw things out because you were sick of them. Now they break before you even learn how to use them.
