How did I learn how to listen to a joke?

A joke telling situation involves certain etiquette from the listener. Don’t interrupt the joke teller’s rhythm, provide energy in the form of anticipation, laugh at the right time.

But I don’t remember anyone ever telling me ‘This is how you listen to a joke’. Or watch a video or take a course on joke listening.

So how did it happen?

1. You existed before everyone had smart phones
2. You watched your family, friends, role models, etc. and saw how they handled joke situations
3. You internalized it

Or be the a-hole that has to interrupt or steel the joke from the teller.

Because the good joke tellers/storytellers were good enough that you just did all of those things naturally. They keep your attention, they have good timing, and they know what jokes or stories are worth telling. Everything else just falls into place.

I had great uncles growing up who were all great storytellers. They all loved to tell jokes, too. They could sit around a table for hours telling stories.
