An interesting thing to think about, and the world would certainly look entirely different. If Rome starts its peak kept on instead of fracturing and disentigrating etc.

A way better question is the burning of the library

There is actually a Youtube video series made a "what if" history guy. Alternative History.

Fun fact, the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Rome) didn't end until 1433.

We would probably be at least 200 years more advance in technology in my opinion.

Rome was stale and moribund. Its fall allowed new ideas to take hold. As another poster stated, the Eastern Roman empire survived into the 15th century, but it was not a center of arts, commerce, or innovation. Meanwhile, a number of vibrant cultures had sprung up among the ruins of the Western empire.

Well yeah.... But that doesn't change the fact that the destruction of the great library in Baghdad is up there with the destruction of the library of alexandria.

Right, but my question is if Rome continued at its peak. Certainly pre Constantinople.

Also Istanbul really, really needs to go back to its original name. Constantinople sounds so much better.

What were humans doing during the Middle Ages? Not much came out of that time, did it?

Western Civilization certainly stalled during the Middle Ages, but I'm not sure that holds true for the rest of the world. China may have been relatively advanced as well as the Arab countries, maybe a history buff on here can fill us in. I'd be curious to hear.

Correct. It expended too much on slave labor. It's building projects were large in scale but not anything brand new in terms of technology. Although Rome must be given credit for concrete.

Rome deserves more credit than concrete of course. It's the most influental empire.

At least we eventually got the Italian Renaissance.
